“I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.” This ancient proverb by Confucius (551 BC to 479 BC) echo my belief that learning becomes deeper and more meaningful if the students are able to learn from their experiences. I engage experiential learning approach using simulation for students to experience authentic clinical situations. Applying Kolb’s experiential learning theory, I structure the learning approach through the process of role playing in a simulated environment, follow by debriefing to enable the learners to reflect on their experience and construct new understanding. I strive to optimize the transfer of experiential learning to real-world situations by focusing on the authenticity of the simulation to match the actual clinical situations, and my role as a facilitator to foster reflection rather than just ‘imparter of knowledge”.

My fundamental philosophy for experiential learning takes on a socio-constructivist approach which I believe the role of social interaction and social process in creating knowledge through shared experience and discussion with others. I encourage collaborative learning among students with diverse background through interprofessional education. I anchor collaborative learning activities experiential learning such as team-based simulation to enable the learners to problem-solve clinical situations through teamwork and communication. I employ virtual technology which has successfully bring together diverse group of learners and facilitators for remote simulation. I believe in blending virtual and physical simulation to optimize collaborative learning.
