Welcome to NUS Medicine, Class of 2025!

Published: 11 Aug 2020

As the Academic Year begins on 11 August 2020, the Dean, Professor Chong Yap Seng, penned a Welcome Letter to the Class of 2025:

“Welcome to NUS Medicine and to the Class of 2025!

As unprecedented as it is, you are the first cohort in the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine to be inducted in this manner. I trust that you will find it in equal parts, refreshing and memorable when you look back on this in the years to come.

Though this form of welcome and introduction is not the ideal way to start your medical school journey, the actual 2020 Medicine Welcome Dinner for Phase I students is scheduled to be held in December as soon as circumstances allow. Until then, the School has prepared a special Welcome Pack for your enjoyment and to introduce you to the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and what we, as a community, stand for. You will see from the House crest on your Welcome Pack the House that you belong to. There are 10 Houses altogether – the Houses are named after core values we hope our students will embody during their time in NUS Medicine and when they finally graduate as fully-fledged doctors. In your pack, you will see a set of customised NUS Medicine items, such as the Class Scarf for the ladies and the Class Tie for the gentlemen, as well as a postcard of our School orchid – the Vanda NUS Medicine. The Class Scarf and Tie are unique to your class and you should wear them for any formal events when you are representing the School or your class. Last but not least, you will find the item you have been waiting for – your doctor’s white coat.  We hope that these items give a preview of the kind of professional conduct and behaviour you are expected to uphold at all times, befitting future doctors. You should also be reminded that, as members of this noble profession, you are expected to exemplify values of respect, integrity, compassion, and humility as you aim to become the kind of doctors you would choose to care for your loved ones.

As the academic year starts on 11 August, I trust that you will endeavour to make the most out of your university life while adhering to current health precautions. Forge strong friendships and relationships, even as you strive to excel in your studies and other extra-curricular commitments. I look forward to meeting you in person on the first day of school. Till then, stay safe and healthy, and exercise personal social responsibility in everything you do.

Have fun in NUS Medicine!”

With my very best wishes,
Chong Yap Seng

The NUS Medicine House System

Every incoming cohort is grouped into ten houses, each with its own identity. Together, the students from the Houses take part in fun and meaningful activities throughout their undergraduate years. Senior and junior students get to interact and build the bonds and friendships that are important later at work in Singapore’s hospitals and clinics.

In a bid to strengthen the sense of identity among the students of each house, the School has recently worked with its students to conceptualise a crest for each of the houses. Click here to find out more!
