Published: 17 Jan 2025

Faye Ng Yu Ci, a 2024 graduate from NUS Medicine, has been selected as one of the 150 Schwarzman Scholars for a fully-funded master’s degree in global affairs at Tsinghua University, Beijing. She is the only Singaporean in this year’s cohort, representing 38 countries and 105 universities worldwide.
The prestigious Schwarzman Scholars programme is known for its rigorous selection process, with the Class of 2025-2026 selected from a record-breaking pool of nearly 5,000 candidates worldwide. Faye’s acceptance into the programme is a testament to her exceptional leadership and strength of character, alongside her intellectual curiosity and academic achievement.

“Faye has never failed to delight me with her enterprising spirit and incisive worldview, as well as what she sets her mind on and commits to accomplishing. Her achievements in academic research, clinical innovation, and the medical humanities speak for her holistic excellence, and she continues to be an inspiration to her peers and juniors in Medicine,” commended Professor Chong Yap Seng, Dean of NUS Medicine.
“I congratulate her on this opportunity to better understand the geopolitical factors driving our fast-changing world through the Schwarzman Scholarship, and believe the programme will groom her well for future leadership roles in public healthcare as a clinician innovator. She is a perfect fit for the programme’s global outlook and cross-disciplinary emphasis—I never doubted she would be selected by the committee,” he adds.

Currently, Faye is serving as a house officer in Singapore’s public healthcare system. She is also a clinical fellow with the Duke-NUS Health Innovator Programme (D-HIP), where she is working on a solution to address the problem of rising myopia prevalence and progression in children. Together with her team, she aims to create a device applying a novel peripheral blurring technology on smart devices to tackle the issue of increasing screen time.

Faye envisions a future in healthcare where treatment plans are optimised for the individual patient, and administrative workload is reduced to enable greater physician-patient interaction. Through her time at Schwarzman Scholars, she hopes to attain an in-depth understanding of China’s healthcare system from within it, learning about its adoption of AI by plugging into Beijing’s innovation ecosystem.
Faye’s interest in China’s socio-economic landscape and healthcare system began during her pre-university years as a bicultural studies scholar. By situating herself at the heart of China’s socioeconomic and political activity, she hopes to better appreciate the intricacies of China’s society and systems, as well as keep her pulse on the latest developments in the capital.
At Tsinghua University, Faye looks forward to building meaningful relationships with both peers and faculty, gaining a global perspective on medicine and healthcare.
“I hope to form memories and friendships at the college that will last for a lifetime,” she shared, excited to embark on the chapter ahead.
Congratulations Faye on being selected as a Schwarzman Scholar! We are incredibly proud of your achievements and wish you continued success in your endeavours.
