Managing blood pressure at home
Published: 17 Nov 2017
Home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) are essential tools and habits that need to be emphasised among physicians and patients with hypertension. Poorly controlled hypertension tends to lead to conditions such as coronary artery disease, stroke and chronic kidney disease.
Associate Professor Jimmy Teo, Head of Nephrology Division at NUS Medicine’s Department of Medicine said, “Definitive diagnosis and analysis will allow patients to better reduce the risks associated with poorly controlled hypertension… Very good management will save lives and help patients have a (longer) lifespan.”
Assoc Prof Teo was a co-author of a study that discovered the existence of gaps between physicians and patients, the challenges that physicians face when educating their patients on high blood pressure and the importance of educating the population and general practitioners on doing HBPM.
