Elective on Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been gaining in popularity Singapore in recent years, with young, bilingual TCM physicians who can explain TCM concepts to patients using Western medical terms. However, there is still a lack of communication between both Chinese and Western medicine practitioners here.

In 2015, private TCM provider Eu Yan Seng (EYS) co-sponsored the first structured TCM elective for NUS Medicine students. Under the four-week module, students undergo training at the EYS Academy and Shanghai University of TCM in China, working with experienced TCM physicians.

Developed in conjunction with the Shanghai University of TCM, the elective aims to “provide medical students with an overview of the theory and practice of TCM and its role in integrative health care,” said Ms Caryn Peh, EYS’ managing director of clinic services.
