Doctors and dentists take up acupuncture
Published: 01 Feb 2017
There is a growing interest in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) among practising doctors and dentists in recent years. They make up more than half of the 249 acupuncturists registered in Singapore.
Assoc Prof Lau Tang Ching, Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Education at NUS Medicine, has been a registered acupuncturist since 2007. He read about how acupuncture can ease pain in several conditions, such as neck and back strain, and myofascial pain syndrome. Although he does not perform acupuncture on patients, the TCM approach comes in handy in his daily medical work.
“Sometimes, I use the principles in communicating with patients, especially those who are inclined to TCM, to explain how their health can be improved with exercise, dietary adjustment and better emotional well-being,” said Prof Lau.
He also applied his knowledge to enhance the teaching of TCM-related topics to medical students.
