An energetic exchange of ideas at the 14th ASEAN Medical Dean’s Summit

Student participants of the 14th ASEAN Medical Dean’s Summit 2024 gathered at the College of Medicine, University of the Philippines Manila from 13 to 14 June.
The 14th ASEAN Medical Dean’s Summit 2024, organised by the ASEAN Medical Students’ Network (AMSN), was held at the College of Medicine, University of the Philippines Manila from 13 to 14 June.
Centered on the theme ‘Revolutionising Medical Education for the Next Generation’, this gathering provides a platform for medical student delegations from various ASEAN countries to collaborate, discuss and formulate ideas on how players in healthcare could impact the future working environment and education.

Our student delegates engaged in a series of thought-provoking and insightful discussions; ranging from topics on transcending healthcare silos, the role of AI in healthcare and building team culture over the two days.
To highlight academic efforts, the Summit featured a series of student abstracts and posters on the latest research and school activities contributed by medical schools in the ASEAN region. This exchange bolstered participants’ learning with thought-provoking points of view, as they found commonalities in regional healthcare challenges. The act of coming together to generate sustainable and scalable solutions energised the students and brought to mind the uniting spirit of healthcare.
A night of socialising organised by the ASEAN student delegates and joined by faculty members from College of Medicine at the University of Philippines Manila and NUS Medicine.
Beyond formalities, we had opportunities to forge close bonds with delegates from other nations through dinners, cultural performances, tours and local nightlife. This opened the gateway to understanding and experiencing the vibrant cultures of the other ASEAN countries, which was equally enriching and enjoyable. As the Singaporean delegates, we had the privilege of sharing our culture through a trivia quiz about Singapore, before ending off on a high note with everyone joining us in a spirited Kallang wave which our NUS Medicine faculty members participated enthusiastically as well.
Overall, the 14th ASEAN Medical Dean’s Summit 2024 underscored the importance of international collaboration and knowledge-sharing that transcends borders, to address healthcare challenges and help advance medicine and healthcare to greater heights. The valuable connections we have established, and knowledge gained have laid a foundation for deeper camaraderie, continued dialogue, and a greater resolve to do our part to uplift the healthcare landscape as a whole, in our respective countries.
