Speaker: Professor Mammen Chandy, Consultant Haematologist, Director, Tata Medical Centre, Kolkata, India

There are different types of stem cells but they all have two unique properties: they are capable of indefinite division (immortal!) and are capable of differentiation into various types of mature end cells. The biologic basis of stemness is now better understood with the production of induced pluripotent stem cells (IPS) challenging the dogma that differentiation is a one way process. The potential applications of stem cells in regenerative medicine will be discussed knowing that moving technology from the research lab to the clinic can be challenging.
