Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP)

The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP) promotes research amongst NUS Medicine undergraduates. Undergraduate research is carried out under the supervision of a Principal Investigator. Students who participate in UROP will be given credit for research work done, and the grade will be reflected in their final year academic transcripts.

In addition, students who do well in their research projects will be able to submit them for consideration for the Outstanding Undergraduate Research Prize.

Students participating in UROP are encouraged to apply for membership in the Wong Hock Boon Society.

The UROP portal may be accessed via this link.

Objective

The UROP aims to provide opportunities for undergraduates to participate in research projects, with the following objectives:

  • To provide early exposure for students in research training in medical sciences
  • To develop independent and critical-thinking doctors of the future
  • To promote an early appreciation of basic science, medical epidemiology and clinical research

Eligibility

All NUS Medicine Undergraduate students are eligible to register for UROP.

All UROP projects have to be registered, latest by end-March, in the M4 academic year.

Students may take up several UROP projects, but would only be graded for one project in the UROP portal.

Research Projects

The projects may be embarked upon and lodged on the UROP portal between M1 to M4 during the undergraduate period, and must meet the following criteria:

  • At least 16 weeks of project work duration. Students who wish to have grades reflected on their transcripts must complete a total of 16 weeks of actual project work time.
  • Submission of a project report in M5, which can include a published paper in a scientific journal.
  • Final oral presentation by the student in M5.
  • Supervisor must be a NUS staff appointed by the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine or have an appointment under NUS Medicine (e.g. Clinical Faculty Scheme (CFS) etc)

Group Projects

With effect from 29 April 2002, no group projects will be allowed.

  • UROP projects must be submitted individually, as UROP is designed to ensure that each student gains experience conducting research independently.
  • While we acknowledge that research is often a collaborative effort—particularly in areas such as data analysis and manuscript preparation—it is essential that each student takes responsibility for a distinct component of the project.
  • Accordingly, each student must have a clearly defined, individual contribution, and the UROP project titles must differ.
  • Each student is also required to submit their own UROP project report reflecting their independent work.

Funding Submission

For each UROP project, students can claim S$500/- (for consumables).

Please submit the request for reimbursement here

Thereafter, please submit all relevant fields and attach the supporting documents here

*You must submit through both links above. Failure to do so, will result in non-processing of UROP claims

Submission of UROP Reports for M5 Students

All M5 students with registered UROP projects must submit your final reports via the UROP system.

Supporting documents, such as published papers/awards etc. should be uploaded along with your report for your supervisor’s and the Dean’s Office’s grading consideration.

Students will be contacted separately for arrangements on the UROP Oral Presentations and Final Report submissions.
