Programme Highlights

Biorisk Management (BRM) has become increasingly important in Singapore, especially after the world experienced COVID-19 pandemic crisis. In Singapore post COVID-19, various industrial sectors including biomedical science, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, engineering, and the food industry see a surge in the demand of biosafety professionals who are trained and competent in BRM.

This course is designed to equip learners with in-depth skills for working safely in a Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) laboratories in Singapore. This course will first introduce BSL-3 containment features, followed by providing effective knowledge transfer in topics closely related to various mitigations measures (Engineering, Administrative, Operational Controls, Personal Protective Equipment for BSL-3), Incident Management, Performance Monitoring and Documentation.

A variety of scenario-based group discussion and experiential learning including instructor-led hands-on activities will be introduced in this course too.

Update:

  • 20 SDUs have been awarded to this short course (BRMC307) and is now accredited by the Singapore Institution of Safety Officers CPD Board.

Benefits of Attending

This course aims to equip the learners with the following expected learning outcome:

– Understand essential concept of biorisk management (BRM) system and the importance of BRM system for managing biological hazards in BSL-3 facilities.
– Understand and identify the hazards associated with biological agents and biological toxins, as well as other types of hazards (e.g., chemical, physical, animals, etc.) related to working in BSL-3 Facilities and implement appropriate risk controls and operational measures.
– Understand and identify biosecurity related hazards (personal security, information security, facility security, etc.) associated with biological agents and biological toxins, as well as to implement appropriate control measures.
– Recognise the responsibilities as user of the BSL-3 facility.
– Manage biological risks (biosafety & biosecurity), conduct risk assessment, apply safe practices, and control measures arising from activities pertaining to biological agents and toxins.
– Manage and respond to incidents due to spillage of hazardous materials, exposure to infectious hazardous agents or any other emergency situations in the laboratory.
– Understand the requirements for audits, inspections, and follow-up with corrective and preventive measures.
– Contribute to continuous improvement and understand the procedures and follow-up from management review.
– Maintain necessary documentation and records pertaining to biosafety, biosecurity, occupational safety and health management, audit and inspection reports, incident and emergency response reports as required by legislations.
