Programme Highlights

Operated by AIU Singapore in collaboration with the Centre for Healthcare Simulation, NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, this course enables doctors to acquire and interpret ultrasound images to identify and assess for cholelithiasis, gallbladder wall thickening, pericholecystic free fluid and common bile duct (CBD) dilatation.

Course Objective:
To utilise diagnostic ultrasound to answer the urgent clinical question: “Is there a cholecystitis or CBD dilatation?” in the emergency environment.

Expected Learning Outcomes:
1. Consolidate the student’s existing skills to accurately and safely operate diagnostic ultrasound equipment to acquire images of the gallbladder in two planes and CBD at porta hepatis.
2. Understand how to accurately measure the gallbladder wall and CBD diameter.
3. To interpret the complexity of anatomy and pathologies encountered when incorporating Point of Care Ultrasound (PoCUS) of the gallbladder and CBD into an urgent patient management pathway in suspicion of cholecystitis and CBD dilatation.
4. Become a safe and experienced PoCUS practitioner.
