Programme Highlights

This foundation course is designed especially for teaching staff and adminstrative staff involved in teaching, developing and managing educational programmes in medical, dental and other healthcare professions. It consists of 2 parts that learners will have to complete: 5 online modules and 1 workshop. The 5 online modules comprises of all the crucial elements in education: curriculum organisation, delivery of instruction and evaluation, assessment and feedback, supporting learners and scholarship of teaching and learning. The workshop will enhance their skills and knowledge in education.

Learner may choose one of these workshops:

i) Teaching and Learning;

ii) Leading and Managing in Education;

iii) Quality Assurance & Accreditation.

The trainers in this course consists of experienced medical educationalist, qualified clinical, allied health and nursing educators, who will share their knowledge and experiences through engaging mini-presentations and case discussions.

The aim of this course is to develop confidence and equip health professions educators with knowledge and skills in education so that they are competent in educating health professions students as well as proficient making educational related decision (such as curriculum development, assessment, quality assurance and leadership).

Course Objective

Teaching students how to learn using appropriate approaches (large group or small group teaching) has always been a challenge. Large classes should not be limited to lecture-based teaching. Several interactive teaching-learning strategies (also referred to as ‘discussion pedagogy’) is reviewed as potential strategies for student engagement in their learning. Learning in small groups optimizes, firstly, student engagement in learning, deeper understanding of content knowledge, develops collaborative learning among peers and also develops important domain-independent skills (e.g., communication, team-work) relevant for future practice. However, for the above to be realised, small groups must be effectively conducted through appropriate facilitation skills.

Pre-Requisites and Assessment

Participants must be appointed by a health professions school/ faculty/ institution such as a polytechnic or ITE to teach or manage a programme. If not applicable, participants should have at least one-year of experience in teaching or managing health professionals. Must be proficient in the English language.

Assessment components include an online quiz and a skill-based assessment. Learners must record at least 75% attendance and pass all assessment components to successfully complete the course and receive a Certificate of Participation.

Awards and Certification

All participants will receive a Certificate of Completion. In addition, the following accredition points are awarded

  • CME points accredited by the Singapore Medical Council (SMC)
  • CPE points accredited by the Singapore Nursing Board (SNB)
