Programme Highlights
By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
a. Understand the biochemical structure and function of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids, and their roles in cellular processes.
b. Describe the mechanisms of cell division, including mitosis and meiosis, and understand the significance of recombination in genetic diversity.
c. Explain the processes of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) replication, transcription, and translation, and how they contribute to protein synthesis.
d. Analyze the regulation of gene expression at the epigenetic and transcriptional levels, including DNA methylation, histone modifications, and the role of non-coding ribonucleic acids (RNA), such as microRNA (miRNA), long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), and circular RNA (circRNA).
e. Master the fundamental techniques in genetic engineering, including gene cloning and polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and apply these techniques to amplify and quantify DNA and RNA.
f. Utilize quantitative techniques such as real-time PCR and reverse-transcription PCR to assess specific genetic regions and transcripts for research and diagnostic purposes.
Benefits of Attending
Precision Medicine is a cutting-edge approach to healthcare that customizes treatment and prevention strategies based on the unique characteristics of each patient. Unlike the conventional ‘one-size-fits-all’ model, Precision Medicine considers individual genetic profiles, environmental, and lifestyle factors that contribute to health and disease.
This module is designed to provide students with essential knowledge and foundational skills in molecular biology and genetics, preparing them for advanced studies (Master of Science) in Precision Health & Medicine. Students will gain an understanding of critical biomolecules leveraged in Precision Medicine, explore foundational genetic principles, and develop proficiency in basic molecular biology tools pivotal to the field.
Who Should Attend
Clinicians, healthcare professionals and administrators, biomedical researchers, data scientists, professionals and students aspiring to enter precision medicine.
Trainer Profile
Dr Xavier Chee Wezen, Lecturer in Precision Medicine, Department of Biochemistry, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore
