Programme Highlights

Organised by the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, Division of Graduate Medical Studies and the Department of Ophthalmology, this four half-day course aims to equip community optometrists with essential knowledge and skills in the areas of cataract detection and post cataract surgery management. The training includes two online Zoom lectures and two hands-on workshops.

Learners may choose to attend all 4 sessions or only the online lectures (Sessions 1 & 3).

Accredited by Optometrists & Opticians Board (16 CPE Points*)

*Participants who attend only the lecture webinars will be awarded 6 CPE points.

Session 1: Tuesday, 7 March 2023

  • Understand the journey of patients with cataract from detection, referral, pre-surgery and post-surgery
  • Identify cataract patients with appropriate clinical assessment methods
  • Competent decision making on when to refer visually significant cataract, and urgency of referral
  • Effective and informative communication skills on pre cataract surgery counselling.

Session 2: Saturday, 11 March 2023 

Hands-on practice on cataract assessment on actual patients with different severity of cataract

[Online Lecture]

Session 3: Tuesday, 14 March 2023 

  • Gain insights on the postoperative examinations for cataract patients
  • Fundamental understanding on the different cataract removal methods and IOL types
  • Determine the common scenarios which indicate the need to re-refer to ophthalmologist post cataract surgery
  • To recognise the refractive and prescribing approaches for post-cataract surgery patients ​
  • Differentiate the pros and cons of monofocal and multifocal IOLs​

[In-Person Workshop]

Session 4: Saturday, 18 March 2023

Hands-on practice /experience with actual patients:

  • Identify various post surgery complications and devise appropriate management plan
  • Formulate differential diagnosis for other pathologies post cataract surgery, when the cause of poor vision is not solely due to prior cataract.
  • Effective communication on postoperative care to patient and caregiver
