Programme Highlights

This 13-week non-academic module provides a comprehensive overview of the important elements required to build and develop a bio-business. Participants will be guided on the process of generating a scientific idea and developing it into a business model and a real business.

The module aims to:

  • Teach students how to transform a scientific idea into a business model and real product
  • Understand the challenges of building a technology company
  • Identify the issues in dealing with intellectual property, fund-raising, regulatory approvals, manufacturing, and commercialization
  • Develop entrepreneurs and industry leaders in bio-businesses with tacit knowledge and important core values
  • Help shape future entrepreneurs and managers in the biomedical field
  • Support the advancement of medicine and usher the transformation that genomics, proteomics, molecular biology, and personalized medicine can bring to human health

A diverse team of lecturers will bring in expert practitioners’ experience and knowledge on different aspects of a bio-business. The module will be conducted in the form of a series of lectures and highly interactive tutorials, workshops, and panel discussions with experts.

Course Agenda

  1. Introduction: Commercialization of technology in Biomedical Sciences; Biomedical Sciences startups – how different than others – ingredients & needs: IP, financing, regulatory, specialized infrastructure, talent, quality systems, Medical engineering vs. drug development; international competences
  2. The entrepreneur: Leadership qualities/skills
  3. Innovation & IP management: Licensing & negotiations; publicly vs privately funded research
  4. Assessing technologies & market opportunities: Innovation & value proposition; marketing research & strategy; risk assessment & management
  5. Product development & regulatory affairs: examples in biotechnology, medical technology & devices; FDA, CE, HSA, SFDA; clinical trials
  6. Quality management systems: ISO, GLP, GMP etc.
  7. Creation of a new bio-venture – The business plan: setting up & growing a Biomedical Sciences company, team building, strategic alliances, business models & market strategies
  8. Creation of a new bio-venture – Capital requirements & fund raising: Operations, financing & exit strategies, M&A, IPO
  9. Examples of success stories presented by invited entrepreneurs: A drug development company, a medical device company, a feed additive company, and a service platform
  10. Workshops: Preparation of business & financial plans; 2. Presentation of draft business & financial plans; 3. Preparation of business pitch with coaches; 4. Final Pitching
  11. Panel discussion: “Biomedical Sciences Industry in  Singapore”

Pre-Requisites and Assessment

Prerequisites:

Open to students and professionals from Life Sciences, Dental, Medicine, School of Public Health, Nursing (ie. Life Sciences, Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery(MBBS), Bachelor of Science (Pharmacy), Bachelor of Nursing, Biomedical Engineering, and related areas and businesses.

Participants are required to work in teams and must be able to develop and present a business idea & plan in the biotech or life sciences field.

Assessment:

  • Project: Develop a Business Plan (Teamwork); Venture Pitch (Teamwork)
  • Written Exam: Final Exam (Individual)

Awards and Certification

Learners who have successfully completed and pass this course will be awarded with a Certificate of Attendance from NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.

1) All self-sponsored Singaporean aged 25 and above can use their SkillsFuture Credit to pay for the course fee.

2) Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy (MCES): Singaporeans aged 40 and above may enjoy subsidies up to 90% of the course fee.

3) Enhanced Training Support for SMEs (ETSS): SME-sponsored employees (Singapore Citizens and PRs) may enjoy subsidies up to 90% of the course fee.

Learners must fulfill at least 75% attendance and pass all assessment components, to be eligible for SSG funding.
