Atrial fibrillation is the commonest type of rapid and irregular heart rhythm that affects 1-2% of Singapore’s population and it may cause a stroke or heart failure. A sudden onset of an abnormal heart rhythm can also lead to an abrupt loss of the heart function, resulting in sudden cardiac death (SCD). It is estimated that 1,000 Singaporeans die from SCD every year, about half of whom are below 60 years old.
