The National University of Singapore (NUS) proudly congratulates Professor Liu Xiaogang, Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemistry (Faculty of Science) and the Department of Surgery (Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine), on receiving the University Research Recognition Award at the 2025 NUS University Awards.

This accolade is one of the University’s highest honours, recognising faculty members whose research has made a profound impact on science, society, and the global academic community.

Professor Liu is internationally renowned for his pioneering work in nanophotonics and bioimaging. His research has redefined the possibilities of deep-tissue visualisation through the development of all-inorganic perovskite nanoscintillators that improve imaging clarity and stability, as well as high-resolution X-ray luminescence extension imaging that enables unprecedented precision in deep-tissue diagnostics.

These advances have opened new frontiers in diagnostics, radiotherapy monitoring and multi-spectral imaging, making significant contributions to both clinical practice and scientific discovery. Professor Liu’s research bridges fundamental science with transformative applications in medicine. By enabling clearer, safer and more accurate imaging, his work empowers clinicians to detect diseases earlier, tailor treatments with greater precision and improve patient outcomes.

The NUS University Awards this year are particularly meaningful, as 2025 marks NUS’s 120th anniversary. In this milestone year, the University celebrates leaders such as Professor Liu whose dedication to excellence embodies the spirit of discovery and service that defines NUS.

NUS President Professor Tan Eng Chye commended the awardees, saying:

“The impact of their work is far-reaching, and their contributions have left an indelible mark that inspires us to scale greater heights. I extend my heartiest congratulations to all award recipients.”

As we celebrate this achievement, NUS warmly congratulates Professor Liu Xiaogang on his well-deserved award and looks forward to his continued leadership in advancing science and improving lives.
