Pioneered and led by Professor Theo Kofidis, Department of Surgery, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, and Head, Department of Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS), NUHCS, the CTVS Simulation Centre –first-of-its-kind in Southeast Asia – is equipped with some of the world’s top digital and mechanical simulators for the training of specialist cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons in endoscopic and minimally invasive surgical techniques.

Accelerated by the pandemic, the adoption of digital tools and the incorporation of mixed, virtual and augmented reality into medical and nursing training has become an integral part of the school’s curriculum and the medical education at NUS Medicine.

Currently, phase three medical students from NUS Medicine are posted to Department of Surgery for surgical training for eight weeks and phase five students receive clinical training in the management of surgical patients by functioning as student interns in the wards for four weeks. With the inauguration of the CTVS Simulation Centre, NUS Medicine students will greatly benefit from the novel surgical tools made accessible to them to master basic surgical techniques and skills that will form the foundation in their journey to become exemplary surgeons.

For medical students aspiring to be surgeons, they will now be able to supplement or expedite their surgical training using simulators at the CTVS Simulation Centre.
