Programme Highlights

Organised by the Department of Pathology, this is a beginner’s level course that equips health science researchers with a basic understanding of pathology – the study of disease in cells and tissues. Participants will gain an understanding of the types of tissues on which research can be applied, and be provided with a visual demonstration of different tissue types in the human body, including normal and cancerous tissues.

The course comprises two broad sections:

    • Laboratory techniques in tissue-based research
      • Participants will be introduced to some basic forms of tissue that the pathology laboratory handles, and how these tissues may be processed for microscopic analysis, immunohistochemical analysis and molecular testing.
    • Histology (Microscopy) of normal tissues and common cancers
      • Participants will be introduced to a range of normal tissues, including epithelial and connective tissue, as well as inflammatory cells (leukocytes) and selected common cancers. Participants will be given the opportunity to perform hands-on virtual microscopy using virtual microscopic slides, and try their hands at recognising tissue types and cancers.

On the final day, participants will be assessed based on their understanding of basic laboratory techniques and histologic interpretation of microscopic images.

Benefits of Attending

This course is primarily targeted at clinical and basic science researchers who are involved in tissue-based research, especially in the field of oncology.

  • Gain a deeper understanding of the types of tissue samples handled in a pathology laboratory that are available for research
  • Know the spectrum of interrogative techniques that can be used on tissues, such as RNA and DNA-based methods, and which tissue sample types are suitable for this spectrum of tests
  • Be more confident in formulating grant and ethics proposals for tissue-based studies
  • Be more confident in interpreting tissue samples under the microscope, particularly in oncology-based research

Who Should Attend

Research assistants, clinical/research fellows, graduate students, post-doctorates and clinicians performing tissue based or oncology based research.
