A woman’s health, nutrition and emotional status before, during and after pregnancy as well as the way she feeds and nurtures her child have a profound impact on the subsequent health and potential of the child. There is strong evidence that events during pregnancy leave an indelible imprint on a child’s physiology and neurodevelopment. There is also evidence that how mothers bring up their children lead to different outcomes that persist past childhood into adult life. Maternal and child health goes beyond survival and it should be accepted that women play a central role in the health of the population.
