Professor Tan Chorh Chuan has been conferred the title of University Professor by NUS to recognise his contributions to the university. He has also been appointed as Senior Advisor to NUS, concurrent with his new current roles as Chief Health Scientist at the Ministry of Health (MOH) and founding Executive Director of the Office for Healthcare Transformation.

The title of University Professor is NUS’ highest academic appointment, given to senior faculty members who have made long term contributions and showcased deep commitment to the university. During his term as NUS president, Prof Tan actively encouraged the development of new initiatives, from opening University Town (UTown) and Yale-NUS College to establishing an entrepreneurial ecosystem and embarking on research internationally.

Prof Tan is the fifth NUS academic professor to receive this appointment, joining Professors Lim Pin, Chong Chi Tat, Wang Gungwu and Shih Choon Fong.

He graduated from NUS in 1983, and joined the Department of Medicine at NUS as a lecturer in 1987, before becoming the NUS Medicine Dean in 1997. He later served as NUS provost in 2004, before he assumed the role of NUS president in 2008. He was also the Director of Medical Services at the Ministry of Health from 2000 to 2004, when he managed the public health response to the SARS crisis in Singapore.
