1. Membership Application

WHBS membership shall be by application. To be eligible for membership, the applicant should be:

  • An undergraduate in the MBBS course at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine
  • Presently engaged OR in the process of starting a supervised research project
  • Membership is awarded based on review from panel

Upon confirmation of WHBS membership, an approval email will be sent to your NUS email address.

The committee reserves the right to consider other criteria for approval of Membership.

Please expect at least 4-6 weeks of buffer time for membership assessment and subsequent approval.

2. Continuing Membership

Once enrolled, members shall have their membership extended, subject to review, on a yearly basis.
Renewed members shall be:

  • Engaged in a supervised research project or taking a hiatus from a project with a commitment to continue at any point in the coming year.
  • Of good academic standing.

Members who do not avail their information for yearly review are liable to be dropped from the Society.

3. Financial Support

All members of the Wong Hock Boon Society are entitled to a fixed funding amount of up to $700/-, which can be utilised throughout the undergraduate years (M1 – M5). This funding is available for the following uses:

a) Local Conference, Training, Workshop and Research Projects 

  • Conference Fee subsidy for local events
  • Workshop fees for WHBS and external scientific or academic workshops or seminars
  • Research Project additional expenses incurred, for example, printing costs, administrative fees or submission fees.

Students are encouraged to attend local conferences, with or without presentation.

  • Without presentation: Cap of $50 per conference, up to 2 local conferences/workshops for the entire duration of membership.
  • With presentation: For local conference, student must be the 1st/co-presenting author of an oral/poster presentation.

b) Overseas Conference 

  • Subsidy of conference fees, hotel accommodation and airfare for local and regional scientific conferences

Note
Financial support is subject to the following conditions:

  • Students must be a member of the Wong Hock Boon Society.
  • Application will be considered if submitted 2 months before the event.
  • Please submit the completed funding application form and supplement the necessary related documents for our funding committee review.
  • We will consider M5 WHBS funding applications submitted before the end of March in the last academic semester of M5, to be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
  • Late submissions or submissions that do not adhere to the instructions will not be submitted to the funding committee for review.
  • Granted primarily to support Local Conference/Workshop/Training, Overseas Conference in ASEAN countries and Research Project.
  • Local Conference/Workshop: Reimbursement only for the student registration fees.
  • Overseas Conference: Reimbursement only for the most economical airfare by the best direct route (quotation from NUS-appointed travel agent), hotel accommodation and student registration fees. Applicant must be 1st presenting author.
  • Financial assistance is provided on a reimbursement basis.
  • Conference  funding review meeting will be held every 2 months by the Committee.
  • Every funding request application to destinations outside of the Asia-Pacific region must be approved on a case-by-case basis, and we cannot guarantee successful application for countries which may pose ongoing safety concerns.
