Programme Highlights

This two-day programme will introduce new and early Clinical Supervisors to the foundations of clinical education, stages of supervision, and learner-focused strategies for building effective clinical supervision skills. The programme will focus on supervision skills for development of allied health students (e.g. Speech Therapists), newly qualified clinicians and junior staff. Training will include small group activities, video vignettes, practice exercises and class reflection.

This course is organised by the Department of Otolaryngology and conducted by teaching faculty from the Masters of Science (Speech and Language Pathology) Programme.

Trainer Profile

This programme is led by Dr Sajlia Bte Jalil, a faculty member and practising Principal Speech Therapist, together with Ms Yu Wanling and Mr Joel Tay who are faculty members and experienced clinicians. Dr Sajlia and Ms Yu are joint coordinators for Clinical Education in the SLP Programme.

2. Supervision and assessment frameworks
  • Supervision frameworks/stages (e.g. Anderson’s Continuum of Supervision/Proctor’s model of supervision)
  • Assessment (models of assessment – formative vs summative; assessment tools)
  • Learning strategies and goal setting
3. Developing clinical reasoning skills
  • Clinical reasoning cycle (Levett, 2010)
  • Making thinking visible
4. Developing reflective practice
  • Model of reflective practice (Gibbs, 1988)
  • Reflection-in-action vs. reflection-on-action
5. Feedback
  • Giving feedback: effective feedback strategies
  • Receiving feedback: evaluation of clinical supervision skills
6. Specific supervisory contexts
  • Supervising students
  • Supervising newly qualified professionals
  • Joint supervision of trainees (with co-supervisors)
  • Paired supervision (two trainees to one supervisor)
7. Issue arising from clinical supervision
  • Struggling supervisees

Pre-Requisites and Assessment

0 to 2 years of supervisory experience. This experience may be with students, AHPC conditional registrants and/or junior therapists.

Assessment components include short-answer and multiple choice questions.

Awards and Certification

All participants will receive a Certificate of Completion.

1) All self-sponsored Singaporean aged 25 and above can use their SkillsFuture Credit to pay for the course fee.

2) Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy (MCES): Singaporeans aged 40 and above may enjoy subsidies up to 90% of the course fee.

3) Enhanced Training Support for SMEs (ETSS): SME-sponsored employees (Singapore Citizens and PRs) may enjoy subsidies up to 90% of the course fee.

4) Learners must pass all assessment components to successfully complete the course and receive a Certificate of Completion. Learners may have to bear the full course fee if they fail to meet this requirement.
