The Swee Liew Wadsworth Memorial Fund
The Swee Liew Wadsworth Memorial Fund was established by the generous donation of the late Professor George Reginald Wadsworth, a former Head of the Department of Physiology, NUS between 1961-1971, to promote and support research in the Department. He donated half his estate (£900,000, approximately S$1.77 million) in 2011 to be used for a research fund in memory of his wife, Madam Chua Siew Liew. The donation intended for research was matched with the same amount by the Singapore government.
The income from the endowed Memorial Fund, in accordance to the wishes of Prof Wadsworth in his will, will be used to support and promote research in the Department of Physiology as follows:
- Funding of research in physiology and disease that will lead to the generation of new knowledge that could be used in the education of medical students
- Promotion of research in physiology and disease that will lead to the generation of new knowledge that could be used in the education of medical students
The Memorial fund will help to promote excellence in research, support intra- and inter-department/faculty research and to support seed or conceptual ideas.
Every year Physiology faculty, research fellows and graduate students are awarded concept research grants to fund innovative research projects. The list of past SLW grant awardees can be found here.
Henry Lee Huat Mong Prize in Physiology
In 2022, the family of the late Mr Lee Huat Mong, a lifelong NUS Medicine employee, donated $15,000 to establish this prize in his memory. Mr Lee began his journey as a laboratory technician and retired as Chief Technician, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and service.
The Henry Lee Huat Mong Prize recognises undergraduate medical students who excel in the study of Physiology, honouring academic achievement and inspiring future clinicians to embrace a strong foundation in biomedical science.

Edward Koo Award in Neuroscience
Dr Edward Koo was a distinguished clinician-scientist whose pioneering work reshaped neuroscience, especially Alzheimer’s disease (AD) research. In Singapore, he was Professor with the Departments of Medicine and Physiology at NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (NUS Medicine), and Advisor to the Memory, Aging and Cognition Centre (MACC), National University Health System. Dr Koo also received the Singapore Translational Research Investigator (STaR) Award, the nation’s top accolade for clinician scientists. His roles in Singapore complemented his international influence and contributed significantly to advances in dementia research and care.
As Professor of Neurosciences at UC San Diego (UCSD), Dr Koo dedicated his career to understanding the cellular and molecular biology of AD, leading to significant insights and potential therapeutic approaches. He also served as co-Director of the Shiley-Marcos Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at UCSD, one of the five original Centers funded by the US National Institute on Aging. Under Dr Koo’s leadership, the Center became a hub for innovative research, multidisciplinary collaborations, and mentorship for future scientists and clinicians.
Dr Koo sadly passed away in 2025, but his legacy lives on through his scientific contributions, mentorship, and commitment to improving the lives of those affected by neurodegenerative diseases. To honour and extend this legacy, NUS Medicine has established the Edward Koo Award in Neuroscience, to be awarded annually to a young basic or clinician-scientist based in Singapore whose work exemplifies Dr Koo’s research interests and values.
