Description
Applications are open to doctors from ASEAN countries for the Lee Foundation and Tan Sri Dr Runme Shaw Fellowship tenable in Singapore. The Fellowship will cover:
- a six-month clinical attachment at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, National University Hospital or the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Singapore General Hospital. The training can either be in (i) Orthopaedic Surgery or (ii) Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery
- temporary medical registration fee
- medical protection insurance fees
- return economy class airfare
- living allowance of SGD2,000.00 per month
- application fee for the fellowship
FOUR awards are available each year. The Fellowship programme is funded by the Shaw Foundation and Lee Foundation. This Fellowship fund is made available through the College of Surgeons, Singapore, and the Academy of Medicine, Singapore.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants should:
- preferably be below 36 years old
- have completed their Orthopaedic Surgery Training and Orthopaedic Specialty Examination
- Fulfil the following requirements:
- have a basic medical degree from an accredited medical university or medical school;
- have passed the relevant national licensing examination in the country of conferment of the basic degree, where applicable;
- have evidence of at least 12 months housemanship / internship with a certificate of satisfactory completion of housemanship or equivalent;
- be registered as a medical practitioner in the country where he is currently practicing;
- be certified to be of good standing by the Medical Council or the relevant national authority;
- must have completed a minimum of 3 years (36 months) of working experience as an Orthopaedic Surgery Specialist after having completed Orthopaedic Surgery Specialist Training and Examination;
- be eligible for Temporary Registration by the Singapore Medical Council (SMC);
- provide 2 Letters of Recommendation from referees of your current employing hospital (including their telephone number and email address);
- In addition to the above criteria, to be eligible for Temporary Registration by the Singapore Medical Council (SMC), the applicant must:
- fulfil English Language requirements of SMC if the medium of instruction for the basic medical qualification is not in English;
- List of Languages Reading, Written and Spoken
IELTS At least 7 for ALL components (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking) in the academic module. TOEFL At least 250 marks for computer-based test or 600 marks for paper-based test or 100 marks for internet-based test (iBT). OET at least Grade B. Test results for Degree & All Clinical Experience obtained from the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or Occupational English Test (OET), within the minimum score accepted by SMC can be considered, subject to a 2-year validity period based on the date of the test.
- Have an offer for a training position either as a Clinical Fellow or Clinical Observer in an SMC approved healthcare institution.

Application
Applicants will need to create an account and submit an online application via Online System for Course Applications (OSCA) by the stipulated deadline. A completed application would have fulfilled the following:
- All required fields are accurately filled and all supporting documents are uploaded into the system
- The non-refundable SGD76.30 application fee payment is successful and supported by Tax Invoice (also known as the receipt) which is downloadable from the system.
The following documents must be submitted together with your application, in OSCA under “Upload Photo and Supporting Documents” > “Any Other Supporting Documents”:
- Completed application form* (PDF downloadable from here)
- Certified true copy / colour-scanned copy of the following documents (Official English translations will be required for stamps or certificates sent that are not in English):
- Passport (full name, date and place of birth, and citizenship)
- Recognised basic medical degree (MBBS)
- Certification of completion of Orthopaedic Surgery Training and Examination
- Certificate / document of passing the relevant National Licensing Examination in the country of conferment of basic degree, if applicable
- Certificate/Letter of satisfactory completion of 12 months of housemanship or equivalent (posting period, appointment, name of hospital, name of department, name of supervisor)
- Certificate/Letter of satisfactory completion of 3 years (36 months) of working experience as an Orthopaedic Surgery Specialist after having completed Orthopaedic Surgery Speciality Training and Examination (posting period, appointment, name of hospital, name of department, name of supervisor)
- Certificate of good standing by the Medical Council or the relevant national authority where you are currently practising
- provide 2 Letters of Recommendation from referees of your current employing hospital (including their telephone number and email address).
* All sections in the application form must be filled in.
All documents uploaded online must be in English. Any document that is not in English must be accompanied by a certified English translation.
Originals of documents submitted online must be produced on the first meeting with DGMS staff in Singapore. Applicants who fail to present their original documents for verification without acceptable reasons will not be considered for the fellowship.
All documents submitted with the application are not returnable.
Late or incomplete applications will not be entertained. Hardcopy and email applications will not be accepted.
