The Master of Medicine (Emergency Medicine) [MMed (Emerg Med)] Part A Examination is a 2-hour paper consisting of 100 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) in Single Best Answer (SBA) format (5-options-choose-1-best answer). Please find a sample paper of 20 MCQs for your reference.
Candidates who are successful in the examination will be awarded certificates deeming them to have passed the MMed (Emerg Med) Part A awarded by the National University of Singapore and the Primary Examination in Emergency Medicine of the Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine.
The syllabus follows the Emergency Medicine Core Curriculum used by the Emergency Medicine Residency Program in Singapore. Please click here to view the syllabus for the examination. The weightage of the various basic sciences of the MMed (Emerg Med) Part A Examination is approximately as follows:

Candidates who are successful in the examination will be awarded certificates deeming them to have passed the Master of Medicine (Emerg Med) Part A awarded by the National University of Singapore and the Primary Examination in Emergency Medicine of the Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine.

- Hold a recognised basic medical degree by Singapore Medical Council (SMC) or by the candidate's country of employment.
- This examination may be taken in or after the first foundation year of training or its overseas equivalent.
Applicants are required to submit an online application via DGMSÂ Online System for Course Applications (OSCA) by the stipulated closing date. A completed application would have fulfilled the following:
- All required fields are accurately filled, and all supporting documents are uploaded into the system
- The non-refundable application fee payment is successful and supported by Tax Invoice (also known as the receipt), which is downloadable from the system
The following documents must be uploaded in OSCA by the closing date:
- Recent passport-sized photograph (image has to be 400 by 514 pixels)
- Certified true copy / scanned coloured copy of the following documents (Official English translations will be required for stamps or certificates sent that are not in English):
- Identification documents:
- NRIC: for locals / Permanent Residents
- Employment Pass and Passport: for foreigners (residing in Singapore)
- Passport: for foreigners (not residing in Singapore)
- Recognised basic medical degree

Photocopies of certificates and/or official translations (in English)#Â including any other official supporting documents will be accepted only if they have been prepared and/or authenticated by one of the following:
- Issuing University of Medical School;
- Medical Council of which you are registered and licensed to practice;
- Ministry of Health, Singapore;
- Notary public or Justice of the Peace;
- Division of Graduate Medical Studies (DGMS) - For authentication by DGMS office, original certificates and documents must be produced.
# Applicants must submit an authenticated translation if their official supporting documents are not in English. A fresh ink stamp must be used to authenticate the copy or translation of the primary medical qualification.
 Applicants who fail to present their original documents for verification without acceptable reasons will not be admitted to the examination.
Applicants whose original documents have been damaged or misplaced must apply to the relevant organisations / authorities for replacements or letters of verification.
An applicant is only allowed to enrol concurrently in another programme offered by NUS or another University only if granted approval from the Vice Dean of Faculty and the Head of Department. The Degree Programme refers to any programme (including examination-only programmes) which leads to NUS Degree conferment.
Successful applicants will be notified via email to accept the placement and make the Examination/Programme fee payment via the application portal. Placement will be confirmed only after payment receipt. The Division of Graduate Medical Studies (DGMS) is not obliged to provide any reasons for unsuccessful applications.

- All requests must be submitted within 14 calendar days from the last day of Examination end date or before the programme commencement date, where applicable.
- Supporting documents must be submitted via email in all cases after submission of the online request.
- The Division will generally consider providing refunds to candidates under the following circumstances:
- Medical – Refund request must be accompanied by a medical certificate.
- Pregnancy – Refund request must be accompanied by a medical report.
- Involvement in an accident, e.g. victim of crime, accident or disaster – Refund request must be supported by evidence such as a medical report and/or police report.
- Compassionate grounds - Bereavement in the immediate family refers to the loss of parent(s), grandparent, sibling, spouse, or child and must be supported by relevant documents such as a death certificate, proof of the relationship, etc.
- Requests for refund under the following reasons will not be considered:
- Lack of preparedness or readiness for the Examination/Programme for which the candidate/student has enrolled.
- Failure to arrange time away from work.
- Inability to secure a visa or other travel documents required to attend the Examination/Programme.

Master of Medicine (Emergency Medicine) Part B & C Examination
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
- Applicants must pass the Master of Medicine (Emergency Medicine [MMed (EM)] Part B examination or Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine (HKCEM) Intermediate Examination in Emergency Medicine (IEEM) Part I examination before being admitted to the MMed (EM) Part C examination.
- Eligible applicants who are practicing in Singapore are required to apply for the MMed (EM) Part B examination via Online System for Course Application (OSCA) together with the MMed (EM) Part C examination via Graduate Admission System (GDA3). [Select programme under Master’s by Coursework, Part-Time, Term = August 2026]. Otherwise, the application for the MMed (EM) Part B examination will be void.
- Eligible applicants who are not practicing in Singapore or are not in Singapore postgraduate Residency programme may choose to apply for the MMed (EM) Part B examination via Online System for Course Application (OSCA) AND/OR MMed (EM) Part C exam via Graduate Admission System (GDA3) [Select programme under Master’s by Coursework, Part-Time, Term = August 2026]. Refer to the section on eligibility criteria for details.
- Re-sit candidates for MMed (EM) Part B and/or Part C examination may apply for the examination by the stipulated closing date, accompanied by the previous results letter. They are required to submit applications via Online System for Course Application (OSCA) and/or Graduate Admission System (GDA3), whichever is applicable.
- All applicants (first-attempt applicants and re-sit candidates) for the MMed (EM) Part C examination are not required to make the application fee payment when submitting the MMed (EM) Part C examination application. The officer-in-charge (OIC) will notify the applicants who have passed the current MMed (EM) Part B examination to proceed with the application fee payment once the MMed (EM) Part B examination results are released (typically about 3 days after the MMed (EM) Part B examination), whichever is earlier. Do note that the application fees are strictly non-refundable.

- The MMed (EM) Part C examination is an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) conducted at NUS.

Master of Medicine (Emergency Medicine) Part B Examination
- Applicants with any one of the following Primary Medical Qualification:
- MMed (EM) Part A (NUS)
- Primary examination of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine
- Primary examination in Emergency Medicine (PEEM) of the HKCEM
- Applicants must complete the MMed (EM) Part B (or HKCEM IEEM Part I) and the MMed (EM) Part C examinations within 6 years from the time they passed the MMed (EM) Part A examination or equivalent, failing which they would need to re-sit the MMed (EM) Part A examination or its recognised equivalent at the time of that re-sit.
- Applicants must have completed at least 24 months of accredited post-internship training (either in Emergency Medicine, Medicine or Surgery), of which at least 12 months should be in Emergency Medicine at the point of sitting the examination (and not at the point of examination application). Only medical officer/residency postings with a continuous period of at least 2 months per posting would be counted. Â Â The clinical postings as per award criteria for the MMed (EM) are as stated under the section of Posting Requirements below.
- The Letter of Certification of completed postings (house officer, medical officer and residency postings) must be endorsed by the Programme Director (PD) (where applicable) or hospital superintendent or equivalent of the jurisdiction where such postings were performed.
Master of Medicine (Emergency Medicine) Part C Examination
- Â Applicants must pass the MMed (EM) Part B examination or HKCEM IEEM Part I.
- Applicants must complete the MMed (EM) Part C examinations within 6 years from the time they passed the MMed (EM) Part A examination or equivalent, failing which they would need to re-sit the MMed (EM) Part A examination or its recognised equivalent at the time of that re-sit.

- Certified true copy / scanned coloured copy of the following documents (Official English translations will be required for stamps or certificates sent that are not in English):

The following are the posting requirements for the conferment of the MMed (EM) degree after passing the MMed (EM) Part C examination:
- Candidates must have completed at least 36 months of medical officer/ residency postings. Post-internship/ housemanship work experience is not recognised and will not be counted toward the 36-month requirement.
- Only completed medical officer/residency postings with a continuous duration of at least 2 months will be counted.
- Candidates would have satisfactorily completed the medical officer/residency postings in the following specialty/sub-specialty:
- At least 12 months of training posts in Emergency Medicine.
- At least 6 months of training in Medicine, of which at least 2 months should be in Internal Medicine and the remainder, if any, at least 2 months in one or more of the following: Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Haematology, Infectious Diseases, Intensive/Critical Care, Medical Oncology, Neonatology, Neurology, Paediatrics, Renal Medicine or Respiratory Medicine.
- At least 6 months of training posts in Surgery, of which no more than 3 months may be in Anaesthesia. The other surgical postings, each of at least 2 months' duration, should be completed in one or more of the following surgical disciplines, namely: Burns and Plastics, Colorectal Surgery, ENT, Eye, General Surgery, Hand Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Neurosurgery or Urology.
- At least 12 months of additional postings in a combination of any of the relevant disciplines, such as Emergency Medicine, Medical postings (e.g. Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Haematology, Infectious Diseases, Intensive /Critical Care, Medical Oncology, Neonatology, Neurology, Paediatrics, Renal Medicine or Respiratory Medicine) and Surgical postings (e.g. Burns and Plastics, Colorectal Surgery, ENT, Eye, General Surgery, Hand Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Neurosurgery or Urology).
- Candidates who have passed the May diet MMed (EM) Part C examination and fulfilled all posting requirements will be conferred in May/June of the same calendar year, and the Commencement Ceremony will be scheduled in the same year in accordance with the NUS commencement schedule.
- Candidates who passed MMed (EM) Part C examination but have not completed the required postings must complete all outstanding postings within 24 months of passing the examination.
- To be conferred the MMed (EM) degree and attend the Commencement Ceremony in the same year, candidates must submit an updated posting letter confirming full completion of the required postings to the DGMS by 30 April of that year. If the updated posting letter is received by DGMS after 30 April, the candidate’s Commencement Ceremony will be scheduled for the following calendar year.
Candidates who passed MMed (EM) Part C examination, but are pending the completion of the required postings, must submit their updated posting letter confirming full completion of required postings to the DGMS by 30th April of each year to be conferred the MMed (EM) degree and to attend the Commencement Ceremony in the same year. Only postings completed by the 30th April deadline will be counted towards eligibility. If the updated posting letter is received by DGMS after 30 April of that year, the candidate’s Commencement Ceremony will be scheduled for the following calendar year. All required postings must be completed within 2 years of passing the MMed (EM) Part C examination.
