Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must have a basic medical degree recognised by the Singapore Medical Council or by the candidate's country of employment. This examination may be taken in or after the first foundation year of training or its overseas equivalent.

Examination Format

The Master of Medicine (Emergency Medicine) [MMed (Emerg Med)] Part A Examination is a 2-hour paper consisting of 100 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) in Single Best Answer (SBA) format (5-options-choose-1-best answer). Please find a sample paper of 20 MCQs for your reference.

The syllabus follows the Emergency Medicine Core Curriculum used by the Emergency Medicine Residency Program in Singapore. Please click here to view the syllabus for the examination. The weightage of the various basic sciences of the MMed (Emerg Med) Part A Examination is approximately as follows:

Award

Candidates who are successful in the examination will be awarded certificates deeming them to have passed the Master of Medicine (Emerg Med) Part A awarded by the National University of Singapore and the Primary Examination in Emergency Medicine of the Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine.

Application

Applicants are required to create an account and submit an online application, via DGMS Online System for Course Applications (OSCA) by the stipulated deadline. All applications (inclusive of the non-refundable SGD87.20 application fee) should be made online by the stipulated closing date. A complete application should be supported by Tax Invoice (also known as the receipt) which is downloadable from the system.

A completed application does not indicate a successful placement or admission into the examination. All applications and fees must be submitted by the stipulated closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be entertained. Hardcopy and email applications will not be accepted.

The following documents must be uploaded in OSCA together with your application:

  • Recent passport-sized photograph (image has to be 400 by 514 pixels)
  • Certified true copy / scanned coloured copy of the following documents (Official English translations will be required for stamps or certificates sent that are not in English):
    • Recognised basic medical degree
    • Identification documents:
      • NRIC : for locals / Permanent Residents
      • Employment Pass and Passport: for foreigners (residing in Singapore)
      • Passport: for foreigners (not residing in Singapore)

Photocopies of certificates and/or official translations (in English)* including any other official supporting documents will be accepted only if they have been prepared and/or authenticated by one of the following:

  • Medical Council of which you are registered and licensed to practice
  • Ministry of Health, Singapore;
  • A notary public or Justice of the Peace;
  • Division of Graduate Medical Studies (DGMS) - For authentication by DGMS office, original certificates and documents must be produced.

*Applicants must submit an authenticated translation if their official supporting documents are not in English. A fresh ink stamp must be used to authenticate the copy or translation of the primary medical qualification.

Applicants who fail to present their original documents for verification without acceptable reasons will not be admitted to the examination.

Applicants whose original documents have been damaged or misplaced must apply to the relevant organizations/authorities for replacements or letters of verification.

DGMS is not obliged to provide reasons for unsuccessful applications. Other respective rules/regulations of DGMS will apply.

Withdrawal Policy

Candidates must contact the respective Officer-in-Charge (OIC) as soon as they know that they are unable to attend the examination enrolled. Request to withdraw from the examination must be made in writing. Emails are acceptable.

Candidates who notify the Division that they are unable to attend the examination on or after the examination dates may request for a refund within 14 calendar days from the last day of the examination and provide the supporting evidence where appropriate. The Division will generally consider providing refunds to candidates under the following circumstances:

  1. Illness - Refund request must be accompanied by a medical certificate.
  2. Pregnancy – Refund request must be accompanied by a medical report.
  3. Involvement in an accident e.g victim of crime, accident or disaster – Refund request must be supported by evidence such as medical report and/or police report.
  4. Bereavement in the immediate family – This normally refers to the loss of parent(s), grandparent, sibling, spouse or child and must be supported by relevant documents such as a death certificate, proof of the relationship, etc.

Supporting evidence must be presented in all cases.

All refunds granted will be subject to 10% administrative charges capped at SGD500.00.

Requests for refund under the following reasons will not be supported:

  1. Lack of preparedness or readiness for the examination for which the candidate has enrolled.
  2. Failure to arrange time away from work.
  3. Inability to secure a visa or other travel documents required to attend the examination.

Important Notice

  • Applicants must pass the MMed (Emerg Med) Part B examination or HKCEM Intermediate Examination in Emergency Medicine (IEEM) Part I examination before being admitted to the MMed (Emerg Med) Part C examination.

  • All eligible applicants for the MMed (Emerg Med) Part B examination and who are practicing in Singapore, are required to apply for the MMed (Emerg Med) Part B examination via OSCA (Online System for Course Application) together with the MMed (Emerg Med) Part C examination via Graduate Admission System (GDA3). [Select programme under Master’s by Coursework, Part-Time, Term = January 2025].  Otherwise, the application for the MMed  (Emerg Med) Part B examination will be void.
  • Re-sit candidates for MMed (Emerg Med) Part B and/or Part C examination may apply for the examination by the stipulated closing date accompanied by the previous results letter. They are required to submit applications via OSCA (Online System for Course Application) and/or Graduate Admission System (GDA3) whichever is applicable.
  • All applicants (first-attempt applicants and re-sit candidates) for the MMed (Emerg Med) Part C examination are not required to make the application fee payment when submitting the MMed (Emerg Med) Part C examination application. The officer-in-charge (OIC) will notify the applicants who have passed the current MMed (Emerg Med) Part B examination to proceed with the application fee payment approximately 4 weeks before the MMed (Emerg Med) Part C examination date or once the MMed (Emerg Med) Part B examination results are released (typically about 3 days after the MMed (Emerg Med) Part B examination), whichever is earlier. Do note that the application fees are strictly non-refundable.

  • The MMed (Emerg Med) Part C examination is an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) conducted at NUS.

Eligibility Criteria - Part B Examination
  • Applicants with any one of the following Primary Medical Qualification :
    • MMed (Emerg Med) Part A (NUS)
    • Fellowship of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine [FRCEM Primary] (formerly known as Member of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (MCEM Part A) / Membership of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (MRCEM Part A); must be taken before the end of 2019.
    • Primary examination of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine
    • Primary examination in Emergency Medicine (PEEM) of the HKCEM
  • Applicants must complete the MMed (Emerg Med) Part B (or HKCEM IEEM Part I) and the EM Part C examinations within 6 years from the time they passed the MMed (Emerg Med) Part A examination or equivalent, failing which they would need to re-sit the MMed (Emerg Med) Part A examination or its recognised equivalent at the time of that re-sit.
  • Applicants must have completed at least 24 months of accredited post-internship training (either in Emergency Medicine, Medicine or Surgery), of which at least 12 months should be in Emergency Medicine at the point of sitting the examination (and not at the point of examination application). Only medical officer/residency postings with a continuous period of at least 2 months per posting would be counted.   The clinical postings as per award criteria for the MMed (Emerg Med) are as stated under the section of Posting Requirements below.
  • The Letter of Certification of completed postings (house officer, medical officer and residency postings) must be endorsed by the Programme Director (PD) (where applicable) or hospital superintendent or equivalent of the jurisdiction where such postings were performed.

 

Application - Part B Examination

Applicants are to submit an online application by creating an account at Online System for Course Application (OSCA) and submit the application by the stipulated deadline. Successful MMed (Emerg Med) Part B examination applicants will be notified via email to accept the placement and make the examination fee payment online.

The following documents must be submitted together with your application:

  • A Letter of Certification of completed postings (House Officer, Medical Officer (MO) and Residency postings) endorsed by the Program Director (where applicable) or Hospital Superintendent or equivalent.
  • Certified true copy / scanned coloured copy of the following documents (Official English translations will be required for stamps or certificates sent that are not in English):
    • Identification documents:
      • NRIC: for locals / Permanent Residents
      • Employment Pass and Passport: for foreigners (residing in Singapore)

    • Results letter from the previous diet (applicable for re-sit candidates)

  • Applicants must complete the MMed (Emerg Med) Part C examinations within 6 years from the time they passed the MMed (Emerg Med) Part A examination or equivalent, failing which they would need to re-sit the MMed (Emerg Med) Part A examination or its recognised equivalent at the time of that re-sit.
  • Applicants must have completed at least 24 months of accredited post-internship training (either in Emergency Medicine, Medicine or Surgery), of which at least 12 months should be in Emergency Medicine at the point of sitting the examination (and not at the point of examination application). Only medical officer/residency postings with a continuous period of at least 2 months per posting would be counted. The clinical postings as per award criteria for the MMed (Emerg Med) are as stated under the section of Posting Requirements below.
  • Candidates from Singapore applying for the MMed (Emerg Med) Part C examination for the first time must do so together with their application for the MMed (Emerg Med) Part B examination.

 

Application - Part C Examination
(Mandatory for applicants practicing in Singapore)

Applicants are to create an online application by creating an account at the Graduate Admission System (GDA3) and submit the application by the stipulated deadline. Successful MMed (Emerg Med) Part B examination applicants will be notified via email to accept the placement and make examination fee payment online.

The following documents must be submitted together with your application:

  • A recent passport-sized photograph (image has to be 400 x 514 pixels)
  • A Letter of Certification of completed postings (House Officer, Medical Officer (MO) and Residency postings) endorsed by the Program Director (where applicable) or Hospital Superintendent or equivalent.

Posting Requirements
(for conferment of Master of Medicine (Emergency Medicine) Degree).

The following are the posting requirements for the conferment of MMed (Emerg Med) after passing the MMed (Emerg Med) Part C examination are as follows:

  • Candidates must have completed at least 36 months of medical officer/ residency postings. Post-internship/ housemanship work experience is not recognised.

All clinical postings must have a continuous duration of at least 2 months to be eligible for the award of MMed (Emerg Med) degree.

  • Candidates would only be conferred the MMed (Emerg Med) degree after they have satisfactorily completed the following:
    1. At least 12 months of training posts in Emergency Medicine.
    2. At least 6 months of training in Medicine, of which at least 2 months should be in Internal Medicine and the remainder, if any, at least 2 months in one or more of the following: Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Haematology, Infectious Diseases, Medical Oncology, Neurology, Paediatrics, Renal Medicine or Respiratory Medicine.
    3. At least 6 months of training posts in Surgery, of which no more than 3 months may be in Anaesthesia. The other surgical postings, each of at least 2 months duration, should be completed in one or more of the following surgical disciplines, namely: Burns and Plastics, Colorectal Surgery, ENT, Eye, General Surgery, Hand Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Neurosurgery or Urology.
    4. At least 12 months of additional postings in a combination of any of the relevant disciplines, such as Emergency Medicine, Medical postings (e.g. Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Haematology, Infectious Diseases, Medical Oncology, Neurology, Paediatrics, Renal Medicine or Respiratory Medicine) and Surgical postings (e.g. Burns and Plastics, Colorectal Surgery, ENT, Eye, General Surgery, Hand Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Neurosurgery or Urology).
  • Candidates who passed MMed (Emerg Med) Part C examination but pending completion of the required postings must submit their updated posting letter, confirming full completion of required postings to the DGMS by 30th April of each year to be conferred the MMed (Emerg Med) degree and to attend the Commencement Ceremony in the same year. Only postings completed by the 30th April deadline will be counted towards eligibility.  All required postings must be completed within 2 years of passing the MMed (Emerg Med) Part C examination.

An applicant is only allowed to enrol concurrently in another programme offered by NUS or another University only if granted approval from the Vice Dean of Faculty and the Head of Department. The Degree Programme refers to any programme (including examination-only programmes) which leads to NUS Degree conferment. DGMS is not obliged to provide reasons for unsuccessful applications. Other respective rules/regulations of DGMS apply.
