Eligibility Criteria 

The following groups of applicants will be eligible for the FM AKT:

  • In-training Year 2 GDFM trainees
  • GDFM trainees who have completed their training
  • Trainees undergoing Year 2 of GDFM refresher course before re-entry into MMed FM College Programme
  • In-training Year 2 and 3 FM residents
  • Residents who have completed their training
  • In-training Year 1 and 2 MMed FM College Programme trainees
  • MMed FM College Programme trainees who have completed their training

All candidates must at least be in their Year 2 training or equivalent training at the time of the examination application. Verification of fulfilment of training requirements will be provided by the respective Sponsoring Institutions. Candidates who exit their training programme before completion of training and before the FM AKT will not be allowed to sit the FM AKT.

 

Examination Format 

180 Single-Best Answer Multiple Choice Questions – 2 Papers (90 MCQs per paper, 2 hours per paper)

The examination will be administered via Examplify, a digital examination software. You are required to bring your own LAPTOP or IPAD and CHARGER to the examination. Please click here for the minimum system requirement for Examplify.

 

Candidates’ briefing on Examplify 

NUS Centre for Instructional Technology (CIT) has scheduled common briefings for all NUS students on Examplify. Candidates are strongly advised to attend one of the briefing sessions if they are new or have/had problems with Examplify. Details on the common briefings that have been scheduled may be found on NUS CIT’s website here.

Application 

Please submit your application online via Online System for Course Applications (OSCA) by the closing date as stipulated above. A complete application would have fulfilled the following: 

  1. all required fields are accurately filled and all supporting documents duly uploaded into the system
  2. the non-refundable SGD76.30 payment is made successfully supported by a Tax Invoice (also known as the receipt) which is downloadable from the system

A successfully completed online application does not indicate a successful placement or admission into the exam. All applications and fees must be submitted by the closing date as stipulated above. Late or incomplete applications will not be entertained. Hardcopy and email applications will be not accepted.

The following documents must be uploaded in OSCA by the closing date:

Applicant who submits all the below supporting documents will not be required to submit again when applying to sit for the GDFM OSCE in the same year.

  • Recent passport-sized photograph (image has to be 400 by 514 pixels) 
  • Certified true copy / scanned coloured copy of the following documents (Official English translations will be required for stamps or certificates sent that are not in English): 
  • Identification documents: 
    • NRIC : for locals / Permanent Residents 
    • Employment Pass and Passport : for foreigners (residing in Singapore) 
    • Passport : for foreigners (not residing in Singapore)
  • Recognised basic medical degree
  • Valid Practising certificate from SMC**
  • Valid BCLS certificate**

**Not a prerequisite for the FM AKT. If your BCLS certificate/Practising certificate is expiring/has expired, you are required to submit a valid BCLS certificate/Practising certificate when applying for the GDFM and MMed FM Part 2 Examinations.

Photocopies of certificates and/or official translations (in English)^ including any other official supporting documents will be accepted only if they have been prepared and/or authenticated by one of the following:

  • Issuing University or Medical School
  • Medical Council of which you are registered and licensed to practice
  • Government Ministries of Health
  • Notary public or Justice of the Peace
  • Division of Graduate Medical Studies (DGMS) - For authentication by DGMS office, original certificates and documents must be produced

^Applicants must submit an authenticated translation if their official supporting documents are not in English.  A fresh ink stamp must be used to authenticate the copy or translation of the primary medical qualification.

Applicants who fail to present their original documents for verification without acceptable reasons will not be admitted to the examination. Applicants whose original documents have been damaged or misplaced must apply to the relevant organizations / authorities for replacements or letters of verification at own cost.

DGMS is not obliged to provide reasons for unsuccessful applications. Other respective rules/regulations of DGMS apply.

 

Withdrawal Policy 

Examination candidates must contact the respective Officer-in-Charge (OIC) as soon as they know that they are unable to attend  the examination enrolled. Request to withdraw from the Examination must be made in writing. Emails are acceptable.

Candidates who notify the Division that they are unable to attend the Examination on or after the Examination dates must request for a refund within 14 calendar days from the last day of the Examination and provide supporting evidence where applicable. The Division will generally consider providing refunds to candidates based on the following circumstances:

  1. Illness - Request for refund must be accompanied by a medical certificate.
  2. Pregnancy – Request for refund must be accompanied by medical report.
  3. Involvement in an accident e.g. victim of crime, accident or disaster – request must be supported by evidence such as medical report and/or police report.
  4. Bereavement in the immediate family – this normally refers to the loss of parent, grandparent, sibling, spouse or child.

Supporting evidence must be presented in all cases.

All refund granted will be subject to 10% administrative charges capped at $500.00.

Requests for refund under the following reasons will not be entertained:

  1. Lack of preparedness or readiness for the exam for which the candidate has enrolled
  2. Failure to arrange time away from work
  3. Inability to secure a visa or other travel documents required to attend the exam

Applicants must fulfil the following before they are eligible to take the Graduate Diploma in Family Medicine (GDip (Fam Med)) Examination, which includes satisfactory attendance record, and completion of the following: 

  1. Passed the Family Medicine Applied Knowledge Test (FM AKT)**
  2. Completed and fulfilled the training requirements of the GDip (Fam Med) programme offered by the College of Family Physicians, Singapore (CFPS).

  3. Hold a practising certificate from SMC which is valid throughout the examination^
  4. Hold a BCLS certificate which is valid throughout the examination^

Note:  

**Training validity applies. The FM AKT is valid for 5 calendar years.
^Applicants who are pending a valid practising certificate or BCLS certificate should submit their application before the deadline, and follow up with the valid document(s) via email before the stipulated deadline to the NUS DGMS Secretariat.

Retake of Examination 

College trainees are given up to 5 years to complete the GDip (Fam Med) programme including the examination [FM AKT (Part 1) and OSCE (Part 2)], failing which they will be required to re-take the entire 2-year programme before being eligible for the examination again. 

Application 

Please submit your application online via Graduate Admission System (GDA2) by the closing date as stipulated above. A step-by-step guide for the online application can be found here. A complete application would have fulfilled the following: 

  1. all required fields are accurately filled and all supporting documents duly uploaded into the system
  2. a unique 10-digit application number is auto-generated by the system (we recommend that you jot down the number for reference)
  3. the non-refundable SGD76.30 payment is made successfully supported by a Tax Invoice (also known as the receipt) which is downloadable from the system 

A successfully completed online application does not indicate a successful placement or admission into the exam. All applications and fees must be submitted by the closing date as stipulated above. Late or incomplete applications will not be entertained. Hardcopy and email applications will not be accepted. 

The following documents must be uploaded in GDA2 by the closing date: 

  • Valid practising certificate from SMC# (valid throughout the examination) 
  • BCLS certificate# (valid throughout the examination) 

#Applicants who had submitted the abovementioned 2 documents during the 2024 FM AKT do not need to submit again.

An applicant is only allowed to enrol concurrently in another programme offered by NUS or another University only if granted approval from the Vice Dean of Faculty and the Head of Department. The Degree Programme refers to any programme (including examination-only programmes) which leads to NUS Degree conferment. DGMS is not obliged to provide reasons for unsuccessful applications. Other respective rules/regulations of DGMS apply.
