Programme Overview

This is a 6-month part-time Programme consisting of 120 training hours. The Programme is designed to encourage the level of participation for medical practitioners who may have difficulties taking extended periods of absence from their work. Each of the 6 Courses is offered as a 1-week block and must be taken consecutively.

Programme Objective

The Graduate Diploma in Occupational Medicine [GDip (Occ Med)], offered by the Division of Graduate Medical Studies (DGMS), National University of Singapore, aims to provide comprehensive skills to doctors in general practice and specialists who wish to have a better understanding of the occupational aspects of their specialty and to be able to implement programmes to protect and promote a healthy workplace in line with the Total Workplace Safety and Health (Total WSH) Initiatives.

Emphasis is placed on the importance of offering a total and integrated workplace safety, health and wellbeing programme. The Programme will also include “Fitness-to-return-to-work” assessment, management of workers with common chronic diseases, and a project to start a Total WSH programme at a workplace.

Eligibility Criteria
  1. Currently practising physicians with a recognised MBBS degree (or equivalent).
  2. At least 2 years’ post-registration with relevant clinical experience.
  3. English Language Requirement: Applicants whose native language or medium of undergraduate instruction is not English must fulfil a minimum level of English proficiency as listed in the table below. For certain qualifications, you are also required to furnish additional English Language test scores (where applicable).

Intake Date

The Programme usually commences in June/July annually and is conducted subject to minimum uptake. These dates are subject to changes.

CME Points

CME points will be awarded to doctors registered under the Singapore Medical Council (SMC). The awarded CME points is subject to the discretion of the SMC.

This Programme consists of 6 Courses, each Course is conducted in a 1-week block and must be taken consecutively:

*There are no lectures for Course 6.

Venue: The lectures will primarily be conducted in-person, with a few select sessions online via Zoom. Venue details will be provided closer to the programme's commencement date.

Programme Assessment and Examination

Students will be assessed as follows:

Assessment Component Details
Written Assessments (WA)


·       Written Assessment 1 (WA1)

Both WAs are online examinations, students are expected to bring their devices on the day of the examination.


  1. Conducted after completion of Courses1 and 2.
  2. To pass WA1, students must also fulfil 75% attendance rate for Courses 1 and 2 lectures.
  3. Students must pass WA1 to be eligible to attend Courses 3 and 4.
·       Written Assessment 2 (WA2)
  1. Conducted after completion of Courses 3 and 4.
  2. To pass WA2, students, must also fulfil 75% attendance rate for Courses 3 and 4 lectures.
  3. Students must pass WA2 to be eligible to attend Courses 5 and 6.
Written Portfolio

·       2 written reports

  1. 2,000- to 3,000-word report based on a visit to, and assessment of, a workplace.
  2. 2,000- to 3,000-word report based on a clinical case examined by the student.
  3. The reports must demonstrate the application of the principles of occupational health and safety in practice.
  4. Late submissions will delay the conferment.
  5. Where necessary, students will be asked to undergo an oral examination at the end of Course 6.

Students must achieve a 75% minimum attendance requirement for each Course and obtain a pass in all the assessment components in order to be conferred the Graduate Diploma. Students conferred with the GDip (Occ Med) may apply to be a Designated Workplace Doctor (DWD) with the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), subject to MOM’s criteria. DWD applications will only be applicable to doctors who are practising in Singapore.

Minimum and Maximum Number of Students

The GDip (Occ Med) Programme will commence upon a successful enrolment of the minimum 18 students. The maximum capacity for each intake is 30 students. If there is an over-subscription, applicants will be placed on the waiting list and will be contacted once a vacancy becomes available.

Funding

The Programme is eligible for the following funding scheme:

  1. Claim Skillsfuture credit - At the point of programme registration, please inform the programme administrator that you intend to use your SkillsFuture Credit in part or in full for the qualifying programme fee. You should then submit your claim on the MySkillsFuture Portal within 60 days before the programme start date (date inclusive). Please visit the Skillsfuture site for more information.
Application

All applications are to be submitted online via the Graduate Admission System (GDA3) by the stipulated closing date. A step-by-step guide to applying online can be found here. A successful application has to fulfil the following:

  1. All required fields are duly completed concisely with all supporting documents** successfully uploaded into the system.
  2. Obtain a unique 10-digit application number that is auto-generated by the system (we recommend that you note down the number for future reference).
  3. A non-refundable payment of SGD87.20 supported by a tax invoice (also known as the receipt) which can be downloaded from the system.

Note that a successful application does not imply a confirmed placement or admission into the Programme.

All applications and fees must be submitted and paid by the stipulated closing date. Late or incomplete applications will not be entertained. Hardcopy and email applications will not be accepted.

**The following supporting documents must be uploaded to the GDA3 system by the closing date:

  •  A recent passport-sized photograph (image has to be in jpeg format, and has to be 400 x 514 pixels).
  • A copy of one’s CV (employment history; in ascending order) to be submitted in the template provided HERE.
  • A certified true copy/scanned coloured copy of the following (Official English translations will be required for stamps or certificates that are not in English):
    • Identification documents:
    • NRIC: for locals/ Permanent Residents.
  • Employment Pass and Passport: for foreigners (residing in Singapore).
  • Recognised basic medical degree certificate (MBBS).
  • Valid practising certificate.
  • Certificates of other medical qualifications, where applicable.
  • English Language Proficiency Test scores, where applicable.

Photocopies of certificates and/or official translations (in English) #, including any other official supporting documents, will only be accepted if they have been prepared and/or authenticated by one of the following:

  • The issuing university or medical school;
  • Medical Council to which the applicant is registered and licensed to practice;
  • Ministry of Health, Singapore;
  • Notary public or a Justice of the Peace;
  • Division of Graduate Medical Studies (DGMS) - For authentication by DGMS office, original certificates and documents must be produced.

#Applicants must submit an authenticated translation if their official supporting documents are not in English. A fresh ink stamp must be used to authenticate the copy or translation of the primary medical qualification.

Applicants who fail to present their original documents for verification without acceptable reasons will not be admitted to the Programme.

Applicants whose original documents have been defaced or misplaced must contact the relevant organisations/authorities for replacements or letters of verification.

An applicant is only allowed to enrol concurrently in another programme offered by NUS or another University only if granted approval from the Vice Dean of Faculty and the Head of Department. The Degree Programme refers to any programme (including examination-only programmes) which leads to NUS Degree conferment. DGMS is not obliged to provide reasons for unsuccessful applications. Other respective rules/regulations of DGMS apply.

Deferment Policy

Students who wish to defer will need to write to DGMS, citing the reason for deferment and providing supporting evidence where applicable after acceptance of placement. This request will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The candidature will automatically lapse should an enrolled student fail to complete the Programme within 3 years from the date of matriculation.

Withdrawal Policy

Students must contact the respective Officer-in-Charge (OIC) as soon as they know that they are unable to attend the Programme enrolled. Request to withdraw from the Programme must be made in writing. Emails are acceptable.

Students who notify the Division on their intent to withdraw from the Programme must request for a refund before the acceptance of placement deadline and provide the supporting evidence where appropriate. Any withdrawal request received after acceptance of placement deadline will not be entertained.

The Division will generally consider providing refunds to candidates based under the following circumstances:

  1. Illness - Refund request must be accompanied by a medical certificate.
  2. Pregnancy – Refund request must be accompanied by a medical report.
  3. Involvement in an accident, e.g. victim of crime, accident or disaster – Refund request must be supported by evidence such as medical report and/or police report.
  4. Bereavement in the immediate family – This normally refers to the loss of parent, grandparent, sibling, spouse or child and must be supported by relevant documents such as a death certificate, proof of the relationship, etc.

Supporting evidence must be presented in all cases.

All refunds granted will be subject to 10% administrative charges capped at $500.00.

Requests for refund under the following reasons will not be entertained:

1. Lack of preparedness or readiness for the Programme for which the student has enrolled.
2. Failure to arrange time away from work.
3. Inability to secure a visa or other travel documents required to attend the Programme.
