THE BANYAN TREE

tbt-01-hero-4x3-v01

The Graduate Diploma in Child and Adolescent Health (GDCAH) is a carefully designed programme that supports the continuing professional development (CPD) of doctors who are passionate about two things: (1) children and youth health, and (2) lifelong learning. The GDCAH is the only diploma course in Singapore and the region offering a hybrid learning model focused on medical doctors' CPD in child and adolescent health. It is also a SMC registrable qualification.

The GDCAH is a stacked-certificates course, comprising two independent graduate certificates: (1) the Certificate in Child Health and (2) the Certificate in Child Development and Adolescent Health. Each graduate certificate spans one semester (20 work weeks). Learners can choose to complete both certificates in one year (two consecutive semesters, a total of 40 work weeks) or take a break in between. Some students have taken a year off between certificates to start a family and returned with fresh insights into their professional learning!

The GDCAH’s design is grounded in learning and cognitive sciences, enabling impactful microlearning through highly curated content and collaborative action learning. The programme is shaped by a needs assessment conducted during the design phase to ensure that students graduate with the Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes (KSAs) required for effective child and adolescent healthcare through transformative learning. (Mezirow, J. (2018). Transformative learning theory. In Contemporary theories of learning (pp. 114-128). Routledge).

Medical doctors with experience in general practice, paediatric practice or specialties involving children and youth will find this course beneficial—and, most importantly, enjoyable!

5 reasons why you should enrol in the GDCAH course!

1

If you are motivated to be a change agent or are already one.
Child and adolescent health needs are evolving rapidly, much like the development of artificial intelligence (AI). Medical school curricula, often focused on short-burst, hospital-based learning, can leave doctors ill-equipped to handle new diseases independently in practice. The GDCAH incorporates real-world insights from stakeholders, providing contemporary course content that equips learners with the competence and confidence to drive change in the care of young patients.

2

If you enjoy learning in a community of like-minded colleagues.
This hybrid course features collaborative, action-based learning through Practice-Based Small Group Learning (PBSGL) and in-person learning clinics with private paediatricians and ambulatory care paediatricians. These in-person sessions offer deep-dive learning, while the rest of the course is delivered through self-directed online learning. Here, you’ll meet faculty and fellow learners from diverse backgrounds—all equally passionate about their work. The small class sizes allow for individualised attention to meet unique learning needs.

3

If you want to be part of a supportive lifelong learning community.
Completing a 40-week course is a significant milestone, but it doesn’t mark the end of your professional learning journey. GDCAH understands that alumni seek ongoing support in their clinical practices. Our community of practice facilitates continuous professional development. We have created a thriving alumni network since the programme’s inception in August 2022, with plans for an alumni colloquium in the near future.

4

If you enjoy co-creating knowledge and skills with experts.
GDCAH recognises that transformative learning occurs when a learner’s existing KSAs are challenged, reviewed, reframed, and consolidated through scaffolding and role modelling. This course is not about imposing behavioural changes; instead, it aims to enhance your self-determined learning journey. GDCAH faculty actively seeks bidirectional learning—learning from you as well as from them—so that we can co-create new KSAs together.

5

If you’re committed to learning new ways to become a trainer.
GDCAH understands resource constraints and opportunity costs associated with medical CPD. A key goal of GDCAH is to develop motivated learners into trainers who can share their newfound KSAs with colleagues in their workplaces.

We invite you to experience a fresh approach to CPD with GDCAH—one that will surprise you with its content and delivery, and transform your practice. Join us in enhancing child and youth health in Singapore and beyond!

Building on professional expertise with a specialisation

Dr Jacquelyn Melody

Dr Jacquelyn Melody, a Master of Medicine in Family Medicine, developed her expertise in paediatrics while balancing a full-time career. With a special interest in paediatrics, Dr Melody sought to enhance her skills to provide better care to her patients and parents in her private clinic. She appreciated the flexibility of enrolling in the Graduate Certificate programmes one semester at a time, allowing her to progress at her own pace without the need for extended time away from her practice. Upon completion of both Graduate Certificates, she will have further solidified her expertise in the field.
