Certificate of Completion in Medical & Health Professions Education


Aim

The certificate programme is designed to improve the skillsets of those who are involved in teaching and facilitating health professional students and trainees. The programme aims to equip them with the relevant knowledge & skills in contemporary teaching-learning principles, strategies and the underpinning theories.


Benefits

The certification includes access to CenMED courses for 3 years. Mentoring and guidance will be provided by our experts in medical education for participants to effectively engage in education projects. Successful participants will be awarded the Certificate of Completion in Medical and Health Professions Education.


Who Can Apply

The certificate programme is open to all healthcare professionals, new or experienced clinical and preclinical tutors, programme developers and education administrators who are interested in improving their profile, knowledge and skillsets in medical education.

Curriculum

This programme consists of the following which must be completed within 3 years.
  • 4 Core Module workshops
  • 1 Elective Module (select any one combination from list)
  • Completion of assignments
  • Submission of a Portfolio
  • Presenting of a health professionals education research project


Core Modules (please choose 4 out of the 5 below)
1) Effective Course Design for Health Professional Education
2) Competency Based Medical /Health Professional Education: Providing Effective Feedback to Enhance Learning
3) Scholarship of Teaching & Learning and Research in Medical Education
4) Interactive Teaching-Learning Strategies in Small & Large Group Settings
5) Assessment: (if you have selected assessment as 1 of your core module, you may select 1 from below)
    i) Assessment of Practical / Clinical Skills: Workplace Based Assessment
    ii) Competency Based Medical / Health Professional Education: Written Assessment
    iii) Assessment of Practical / Clinical Skills: Multi-station Examinations and Portfolio for Learning & Assessment (2 workshops)
Elective Modules (select any one combination)
APMEC main conference + 1 pre-conference workshop
(Optional course: ESME-APMEC)
Other CenMED faculty development workshops (minimum 2 workshops not selected as the core)
Medical Education Conferences + workshop, such as AMEE, Ottawa, AAMC, ANZAME etc. For other conferences, prior approval from course administrators is required

Assignment

At the end of each module workshop, participants have to complete an assignment within 1 month’s time. A link will be sent to the participants to access the assignment topic. This is meant to help participants to apply the theories learnt, and conceptualise it to their teaching and learning environment. In the event that the assignment is not submitted by the stated deadline, participants are required to attend the workshop as well as pay the registration fee again unless they write in for extension. Extension of deadline for submission of assignment is subject to the Admissions Committee’s approval.


Assessment

Assessment involves:
  1. completion of assignments (see above)
  2. submission of a portfolio after applying the concepts learnt into the learner’s practice environment.
    Participants are required to submit the portfolio within 1 month’s time after attending all the required modules.

  3. presentation of a short medical education research project in at least 1 educational meeting (Eg:NUS-PRIME), or conference (Eg: APMEC), towards the end of the certification process.
    • The education research project should be related to health professionals education, including but not limited to, pedagogical innovations, educational leadership and management and interprofessional education.
    • Research aim, methods, results, discussion & conclusions should be included in the presentation.
    • The assessment criteria for the project includes clarity of the research aim, suitability and robustness of the method(s) employed, validity and reliability of the data and coherency of the discussion and conclusion with the research aim.
    • From 2018 intake onward, participants are required to submit an one-page research plan using the following template. Approval by the committee is necessary before initiating the research project. You may submit this form to three months after participating in this programme.

Program Cancellation / Withdrawal Policy

We understand that cancellations or schedule changes are sometimes inevitable. The following policies are necessary to ensure the continued success of the Certificate of Completion program.

Cancellations received in writing 2 months prior to the start date of the intake will receive full refund of payment. Only 50% of Certification fees will be refunded for cancellations within 1 month from the start date of the intake. No refund shall be made for cancellations after the start date of the intake. Cancellations resulting from module date changes by the CenMED, will be credited for the next available course within 3 years from the start date of the intake. All cancellations must be made in writing to CenMED.

Once you have registered for a particular module, changing it to another module will result in an administrative fee of S$100 (not including GST), for each module change requested. This policy is to ensure that other participants are not deprived from attending the modules.

Should your institution/sponsoring authority choose to withdraw funding for this certification and you have already been enrolled for an intake, it falls upon you - the applicant, to pay for the certification personally.

Should individual participant withdraw from this certification, it is the individual participant’s responsibility to write in to CenMED as well as to inform your own department. No refund or replacement shall be made after the individual participant has enrolled in the course.
