Medical Education Round

The CenMED Medical Education Round

The CenMED Medical Education Round was launched in July 2006.

Objectives

  • Share and Learn issues in medical education
  • Create awareness among academic staff about medical education issues
  • Support the NUS Medicine’s strategic goal of teaching excellence
  • Provide academic interaction at a multidisciplinary level
  • Teach problem-solving skills in medical education using documented cases
  • Improve competency in the delivery of quality medical education
  • Develop communication skills in presenting and discussing medical education issues
  • Present medical educational research findings of our faculty members to the colleagues

On 27 April 2007, we introduced the "Art of Medicine" Series. This series is held quarterly. It covers the ethical and professional issues in every medical scenario that a doctor will normally find himself / herself in for example "end-of-life" considerations, domestic / sexual / substance abuse, police / legal / government involvement, conflict of interests, etc as well as important knowledge about the available support services that, unfortunately, many doctors are not aware of.

Through this series of talks, we also hope that senior and experienced clinicians can share with us their views on the "Art of Medicine". We envisage these quotes from William Osler as topics around which a speaker might be able to share his / her thoughts with us:

  1. The practice of medicine is an art, not a trade; a calling, not a business; a calling in which your heart will be exercised equally with your head. Often the best part of your work will have nothing to do with potions and powders, but with the exercise of an influence of the strong upon the weak, of the righteous upon the wicked, of the wise upon the foolish.

  2. The young physician starts life with 20 drugs for each disease, and the old physician ends life with one drug for 20 diseases.

  3. The good physician treats the disease; the great physician treats the patient who has the disease.

  4. Care more for the individual patient than for the special features of the disease. Putting yourself in his place, the kindly word, the cheerful greeting, the sympathetic look – these the patient understands.
