Research for Impact

Research for Impact is a Singapore-based think-and-do-tank which aims to make research and evaluation accessible, inclusive, and transformative for social and economic development policy and practice in Asia.

It enables organizations and communities to empower themselves through data and analysis for better design, implementation, evaluation and advocacy. It combines world-class expertise and global experience with a collaborative, ground-up approach and a commitment to representation and equity among stakeholders.

Nick read psychology at the Panteion University of Athens (Greece), and obtained a MSc in Organisational & Economic Psychology from the same university, before completing a PhD in behavioural decision science in 2004 (UCL, UK). In addition to his Visiting Professor role within the NUS Behavioural and Implementation Sciences Institute, Nick is a Professor of Implementation Science and Patient Safety and Director of the Centre for Implementation Science at King’s College London, UK (2015 – Present) and has held academic appointments in the Department of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial College London, UK (2004 – 2015).

Nick’s research vision is to achieve population health and high-quality healthcare delivery through application of psychological and behavioural sciences, and partnership development between stakeholders in academia, health services, charitable organisations and industry. Nick’s research is situated within the multidisciplinary space of implementation science, improvement science, and applied psychology.

Nick’s research has been disseminated in over 370 publications and over 120 invited lectures worldwide and has won over numerous awards. Nick serves on the WHO BEsD group (Measuring Behavioural and Social Drivers of Vaccination, 2018 – Present), on the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain & Ireland and Difficult Airway Society Human Factors and Ergonomics joint Guideline Development Group (2017 – Present), and as an expert advisor to the UK’s Safe Anaesthesia Liaison Group (2011 – Present). Nick has previously served on the Board of Directors of the US-based Association for Surgical Education (2013 – 2016), was the Founding Editor-in-Chief of BMJ Simulation & Technology Enhanced Learning (2014 – 2019) and an Associate Editor of Implementation Science (2012 – 2021) peer-reviewed journals.

Robyn Mildon, PhD, is an internationally recognised figure in the field of implementation science, evidence synthesis and knowledge translation, and program and policy evaluations in health, education and human services. She is the Founding Executive Director of the Centre for Evidence and Implementation (CEI www.ceiglobal.org ), a global social purpose organisation whose work now spans across 7 countries including Singapore. She is an Adjunct Associate Professor at Monash University, a Visiting Professor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, Co-Director of the recently established Behavioural and Implementation Science Interventions (BISI), National University of Singapore.

Over her career, Robyn’s work has helped to advance the implementation of better evidence in policy and practice settings, improving the quality and effectiveness of health, education and human services. She has been a keynote speaker at multiple events around the globe and designed and led a number of workshops to train students, policy makers and practitioners in implementation science and evaluation methods. Robyn has authored or co-authored multiple peer-reviewed publications, commissioned evidence synthesis reviews and book chapters. She also led the design and delivery of the Specialist Certificate in Implementation Science at the University of Melbourne and is a Co-Author of an edited book Implementation Science 3.0 (Springer, 2020).

Giuseppe Alessandro Veltri holds an MSc in Social Research Methods (Statistics) from the Methodology Department of the London School of Economics (LSE) and a PhD in Social Psychology from the LSE. After his PhD, he has been a research associate at the Institut Jean Nicod (Ecole Normale Supérieure) in Paris. He worked for the European Commission JRC between 2009-2011. Most recently, he has been a full professor of computational social science and behavioural data science at the Department of Sociology and Social Research at the University of Trento. His main interests are the crossover of behavioural and computational social science, particularly in innovative research methods.

Keri McCrickerd is a research scientist with a background in experimental psychology. Her research centres on the study of appetite and eating behaviour in children and adults, and the design and implementation of evidence-based and accessible interventions to promote health and wellbeing in clinical and community settings.

Trained as a social psychologist, Jessica’s work focuses on understanding human behaviour and developing interventions to improve well-being. Her research spans psychology, behaviour science and mental health, with an emphasis on translating evidence-based insights into actionable tools.

An experienced researcher and administrator in different areas of Singapore healthcare, Shao Chuen's main research interest include implementing evidence- based decision-making practices in the different healthcare settings; evaluating and improving the adoption of new healthcare technologies and healthcare programme planning and evaluation.

He has also taught courses in grantsmanship, programme evaluation; health services research and health technology assessment.

Jenn has been serving the education community for the last 12 years. She started her career in education first as a polytechnic lecturer and moving onto curriculum planning and development in NUS Medicine.

Her expertise are in the areas of strategic planning, curriculum development, stakeholders engagement, and change management.

Mary has several years of experience in both the research and administrative setting. She has been in the field of biomedical science for more than 10 years working with animal models and human samples, with a research interest in neurobiology.

In recent years, she expanded her research field into population health, conducting and evaluating studies in geriatric research. Mary has been involved in multiple projects and studies related to healthcare services and programmes and collaborating with clinicians, researchers and external stakeholders from various disciplines.

Cecilia brings almost 3 decades of experience as an administrative professional; of which 18 years serving in the education industry. Her expertise is in the areas of stakeholder engagement, events management, and project management within diverse multicultural environment.

Weilin has served in the higher education sector for the past 5 years. Prior to that, she also has several years of experience in the public sector. Her expertise is in the areas of project management, events management and stakeholder engagement.

Lynette has seven years of experience in conducting research from end-to-end. She has strong interest in health services and population health research, which includes evaluation of complex healthcare interventions. In recent years, she expanded her interest into implementation science research as a tool to holistically implement and evaluate transformative healthcare programmes and policies.

Lynette has been working with various stakeholders in single- and multi-site studies. She also has experience in grant management and research administration.

Fairuz has served in the higher education sector for the past 6 years, in different local institutes and in multi disciplinary researches. Her expertise is in the areas of project management, events management and stakeholder engagement.

Terence is a Family Physician working as a locum doctor with National University Polyclinics and St. Andrew's Migrant Worker Medical Centre. He has an interest in learning how to improve health outcomes at a population level. He aims to learn more in the area of implementing health policies and how it affects individual health choices and how he can work in this area.

Aruna brings extensive experience in Singapore's education sector, spanning schools, polytechnics, and universities. Her expertise includes facilitation, curriculum development, education administration, program management, student services, and teaching support. She has successfully managed undergraduate courses and contributed to CET course and event management.
 
At the Centre for Behavioural and Implementation Science Interventions (BISI), she supports the MScBIS and CET programs through teaching support, curriculum development, course management, student services, and ensuring operational efficiency.

Eleanor has 6 years of experience in education, including lecturing, professional development and curriculum design. She also has a background in microbiology research and the development of personalised therapies within hospital settings.

Eugene is a behavioural scientist with a passion for research that protects and/or enhances the welfare of individuals in organisations and in society. His primary research interests include organizational behaviour (e.g., incivility, bystander intervention), health services research (e.g., person-centered care), and decision making (e.g., shared decision making). He employs laboratory and online experiments, conducts observational field studies, and develops surveys for investigating phenomena of interest, generating insights to inform theory and practice.

Before joining BISI, Eugene was the Research Manager at NUS Care Unit and has experience with running campus climate surveys, grant management, mentoring early-career researchers, formulating policy and practical recommendations, and developing behaviour change interventions. Eugene has worked with healthcare practitioners on topics ranging from shared decision making to disruptive behaviour. He also has prior experience working with the Behavioural Insights Team in HMRC and with the UK Consumer Rights Association.

Celeste, a licensed clinical psychologist and systemic practitioner, is dedicated to addressing diverse communities' mental health and wellbeing needs. Her doctoral research at the University College London Centre for Outcome Research and Effectiveness (CORE) focused on evaluating the effectiveness of psychological interventions and treatment responses for depression in the U.K. She utilised large datasets and trajectory modelling to optimise therapeutic outcomes and mental health management in London.

With clinical experience spanning various sectors, Celeste has provided psychological therapies to people of all ages in the U.K. and Singapore. Additionally, she has shared her expertise with organisations, guiding them in leveraging psychological insights, behavioural sciences and evidence-based strategies to address complex societal issues such as sexism, gender-based violence, vaccination uptake, and fostering healthier work cultures.

Jean is a behavioral researcher who is passionate about studying the psychology of human decision making. In her doctoral work, she focused on consumer decision making, and personal finance decision making. Currently at BISI, her research aims to investigate the root causes of health disparities, understand barriers to health behaviors, and identify effective interventions to enhance population health.

Jumana is a behavioural scientist passionate about improving public health outcomes through innovative approaches. Her research interests include population health, chronic disease prevention, and program design and evaluation. By leveraging design thinking methodologies and public and patient involvement, she aims to implement evidence-based interventions that are not only sustainably effective but also culturally sensitive and inclusive.

Previously, she has been involved in pushing forward agendas like HIV prevention, curbing e-cigarette uptake among adolescents, and community-based approaches for chronic disease management in global health settings. She has also applied behavioural science in adopting digital health for smoking cessation, health promotion and mental wellbeing. During her doctoral research, she focused on ways to tap into intrinsic motivation for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease prevention through risk communication and e-counselling platforms.

Kenneth is a Behavioral and Experimental Economist with an interest in belief updating, information economics and search theory. In his doctoral work at the University of California, Santa Barbara he studied how people update their beliefs when presented with new information in the lab and the labor market. At BISI, his research aims to apply insights from behavioural economics to help people improve their health decisions and health outcomes.

Laura is a medical doctor with previous clinical expertise in the field of paediatrics. Her doctoral thesis evaluated the concordance with evidence-based practice of mental health apps featured in commercial app stores. Laura is an accomplished evidence synthesis researcher with experience in qualitative research methods. Her research interests span the use of digital technologies to improve the delivery of healthcare and improve patient outcomes.

Niharika is a social scientist with a research background spanning health, gender, and the political economy of development. Her investigations have explored the governance of digital health, the implications of the pandemic on sexual and reproductive health, and initiatives aimed at enhancing the skills, livelihoods, and financial inclusion of underprivileged women. She has also examined the impact of women's role in various governance structures on welfare outcomes for different population segments. Niharika has extensive experience in monitoring and evaluating large-scale projects.

Dr. Vashishtha is a seasoned implementation scientist and mixed-method researcher with a specialization in quantitative methodologies, including clinical and economic evaluations. Their expertise lies in the design, execution, and analysis of complex interventions that improve health outcomes. Her current research focuses on innovative digital interventions for weight management, utilizing technology to address key public health challenges related to obesity and lifestyle diseases.

In previous roles, she has been deeply involved in health services research, targeting lifestyle factors to reduce the burden of chronic diseases, particularly in aging populations. By designing interventions tailored to the needs of older adults, she has contributed significantly to research efforts aimed at improving quality of life and promoting healthier aging, in Singapore context.

Dr. Vashishtha brings a wealth of experience in translating evidence into practice, ensuring that research findings are effectively embedded in healthcare settings. Their implementation research efforts emphasize the adoption of digital health solutions such as eHealth, mHealth, and healthcare-related AI, aiming to streamline care pathways and increase the accessibility of healthcare for diverse populations. She is also adept at working across both clinical and community-based settings, ensuring that interventions reach populations most in need.

Passionate about health equity, she is committed to projects that equitable access of high-quality healthcare for all individuals. Her work bridges the gap between research and practice, fostering innovations that transform healthcare delivery.

Dr Wang is a dedicated nursing researcher with a focus on clinical research and digital health. Over the past five years, Dr Wang has been committed to understanding factors that influence stress management among healthcare workers and exploring ways to improve their stress management behaviors and outcomes. Dr Wang has experience in managing clinical trials, including protocol design, data collection, and publication preparation. Prior to this, Dr Wang worked in a general hospital in China for over ten years, gaining valuable experience in clinical nursing. Dr Wang is passionate about enhancing healthcare quality and patient outcomes through research and innovation.

Aloysius is a psychologist and seasoned researcher with over a decade of experience leading and collaborating on health research projects with diverse designs, including cluster randomized controlled trials, cohort studies, qualitative interviews, and systematic reviews. His expertise spans both quantitative and qualitative research methods. He has contributed to projects across various fields, such as primary care, cardiovascular risk communication, cardiac rehabilitation, cancer, and mental health. Aloysius' work frequently involves innovative approaches such as telemedicine and public stakeholder engagement in health studies, underscoring his commitment to advancing healthcare practices through evidence-based research.

Amrita holds a Bachelors degree in Economics and a Masters degree in Decision Sciences. Her research interests lie primarily in the areas of behavioural sciences and decision-making psychology. Before joining BISI, she worked in the corporate sector for 6 years, where she was involved in operations strategy and supply chain analytics. 

Gigi has an academic research background in Psychology. She has experience with research and management in a neurological disorders lab, as well as the delivery of clinical mental health services and community health programs.

She has a keen interest in the integration of evidence-based mental healthcare services into primary care, and the development and implementation of health policies to promote such integration.

Bryan is a Research Assistant at BISI, who is primarily working with Prof. Ayelet Gneezy. He is an aspiring behavioural researchers with a primary research interests in encouraging healthy behaviours. Currently, he is involved in a few projects involving caregivers and genetic health.

Conor Luck is a dedicated and compassionate professional with a background in science and humanitarian service. He graduated from Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Washington, DC, in 2023, majoring in Science, Technology, and International Affairs with a minor in Environmental Studies. In 2024, he completed a pre-medical post-baccalaureate certificate at Georgetown.

During his undergraduate studies, Conor worked as a research assistant in behavioural science at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, contributing to several research projects. He has a passion for service and charity, having volunteered as a medical assistant at the Catholic Charities Medical Center for five years. Most recently, he completed an internship as an international programmes associate for the disaster relief NGO, Mercy Relief.

Conor aims to combine his interests in research and service to pursue a career focused on compassionate, equitable, and evidence-based care. Outside of his professional pursuits, Conor enjoys music, art, and outdoor activities like rock climbing, hiking and sports.

As a recent graduate, Kaylia has gained experience in conducting research in the field of Psychology through her involvement in multiple research projects. During her undergraduate studies, she served at a number of non-profit organizations that provided healthcare services to various population groups.

She has a strong interest in utilizing evidence-based practices to improve healthcare policies and programs.

Sydney Callaway is a research assistant to Professor Ayelet Gneezy with a background in psychology, economics, and religion. Her research centers on the study of attitudes, social norms, and social behavior, with an emphasis on experimental and survey methods. She holds two masters degrees from the University of Chicago in Economics (M.A.) and Religious Studies (M.Div.), and a bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina in Philosophy (B.A.).

Isaac Tan recently completed his A-Level examinations and is currently pursuing an internship. He is excited to learn more about research work and how it can be translated into real-world solutions to improve public health outcomes.
