Appreciation Ceremonies

Anatomy is the study of the structural organization of the human body. A good foundation in human anatomy is integral to the training of medical doctors, dental surgeons, nurses and other allied healthcare professionals. Furthermore, doctors in surgical residency training as well as qualified surgeons often pursue special courses in surgical anatomy to enhance their skills and learn new techniques. This detailed knowledge of the body, its structures and organization, is best done via the actual examination of physical specimens. That is why body donation plays such a critical role in helping medical and health-related science students to master the complex anatomy of the human body and provides researchers with an essential tool for discoveries to help patients.

Body donations to the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine are thus greatly appreciated by the students and faculty, who treat each and every donated body with the utmost respect and dignity. Each year, students and faculty organise and participate in an Appreciation Ceremony for these 'Silent Mentors' as a mark of respect and gratitude to the once living individuals whose bodies have been used to impart invaluable anatomical knowledge to the students.
