Novel stem cell therapy for cancer-stricken pets

N2CR member, A/Prof Too Heng-Phon, Dr Sarah Ho and team have developed a way to use stem cells to treat cancer in cats and dogs, a method originally developed for humans. The stem cells are first modified and then injected into the animal, while off-the-shelf anti-fungal drugs are taken orally.

These modified stem cells are able to specifically target and kill the cancer cells before dying off themselves. The use of this treatment has allowed animals with terminal cancer to live longer than expected, or have a better quality of life.
