Research Interests and Achievements

Our group focuses on developing translational optogenetics for direct visual restoration and in regenerative medicine for inherited retinal diseases (IRD) therapeutics. Optogenetics is the application of light and genetic engineering to photosensitize cells in response to specific wavelength of light. In cases such as Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), optogenetics can be applied to provide visual restoration to ganglion cells bypassing the degenerated photoreceptors. Applications of optogenetics here would require ultra-sensitivity and broad absorption spectrum. We integrate our moecular optogenetics knowledge here to fit clinically relevance translation, by developing opsins that could response to a wider spectrum of photons with low intensity, in hopes of able to provide long-lasting direct visual restoration from bench to bedside.
