The department was initiated in response to the rise of technology in healthcare, including:

• Digitalisation of healthcare through electronic health records
• Adoption of new technologies such as cloud computing, holomedicine and robotics
• Advancements in Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence and Large Language Models

Why Biomedical Informatics? 

Biomedical Informatics harnesses data and technology to improve patient care, advance medical research, enhance population health and in turn, shapes the future of healthcare delivery. The department develops programmes that combine healthcare, data science, artificial intelligence and information technology to provide medical students with essential skills to stay ahead of the healthcare curve and and excel in the evolving field of healthcare informatics.
