Dr. Bryan Ng is Senior Consultant and Head of the Department of Anaesthesia at the National University Hospital (NUH) and the National University of Singapore (NUS). With dual subspecialty interests in Obstetrics and Perioperative Medicine, Dr. Ng has dedicated his career to advancing patient care and medical education.

Dr. Ng earned his MBBS from NUS in 1999 and completed his Anaesthesia training in Singapore and the United Kingdom (UK). His training included two years at the Royal Berkshire Hospital and a 6 month Obstetric Anaesthesia fellowship at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

From 2010 to 2018, as the lead for Obstetric Anaesthesia, Dr. Ng introduced Patient Controlled Epidural Analgesia and Patient Controlled Intravenous Analgesia in labour. He was also part of the team that pioneered the PRactical Obstetric Multi Professional Training (PROMPT) Course in Singapore. This is a multidisciplinary program developed in the UK and designed to reduce preventable harm to mothers and babies.

In his role as the lead for Perioperative Medicine and director of the Anaesthesia Outpatient Consultation Clinic (AOCC), Dr. Ng created educational materials, including videos, leaflets, and articles, to help patients and their families make informed decisions. He is committed to improving patient care through education and empowerment, and advocates for shared decision-making at NUH.

Dr. Ng is also passionate about sustainability, both in terms of environmental impact and maintaining a healthy healthcare workforce. Under his leadership, the Department of Anaesthesia has reduced the use of Desflurane and Nitrous Oxide, and initiated paper, plastics and PVC recycling programs. He advocates for appropriate care to enhance patient outcomes while minimising unnecessary healthcare interventions and their associated cost and environmental impact. The department prioritises staff wellbeing and engagement through a flattened hierarchy, subspecialty mentorship, peer support programs and flexible rostering.

Recognised as a dedicated and inspiring teacher and mentor, Dr. Ng guides trainees and juniors to make decisions in challenging scenarios and develop their own practice. He is committed to building on the legacy he has inherited and continues to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals. In recognition of his achievements, he was conferred the NUH Master Clinician Award in 2024.

Assoc Prof Ti Lian Kah

A/Prof Ti is a Senior Consultant and Director of Cardiac Anaesthesia with the Department of Anaesthesia, NUH.

A/Prof Ti graduated from the National University of Singapore; and completed his fellowship training in Cardiac Anaesthesia at Duke University Medical Center in the United States, and is credentialed in perioperative transesophageal echocardiography.

His research interests are in outcomes after cardiac anaesthesia and surgery; conduct of anaesthesia; transesophageal echocardiography; and medical education.

A/Prof Ti has published more than 50 research papers in peer-reviewed journals. He actively mentors’ medical students and residents in research, and together with his mentees have won several abstract awards in international conferences.

A/Prof Ti is currently the President of the College of Anaesthesiologists Singapore, a professional body that represents the interests of the specialty of Anaesthesiology in the Academy of Medicine, Singapore.

Assoc Prof Chen Fun Gee

Assoc Prof Eugene Liu Hern Choon

Profile:

A/Prof Eugene Liu is the Chief Sustainability Officer of NUHS, leading the drive towards environmentally sustainable clinical care and operations, involving the value-based care, built environment, energy use, greenery, procurement and waste management domains. He is concurrently the Group Director, Strategic Facilities Planning, planning the infrastructure to enable NUHS’s academic health system mission, and Chairman of the Hospital Planning Committee, leading the work to redevelop NUH.

Eugene is NUH’s immediate past CEO. He led the development of NUH’s “peaks of excellence” in complex tertiary care that define NUH as an academic medical centre, and the implementation of value-based care, risk management and emergency preparedness in NUH. He oversaw the development and operationalization of several new buildings and facilities in NUH and led the Masterplan for the redevelopment of Kent Ridge Campus. He led NUH’s response at the outbreak of COVID.

Eugene served previously as Head of the Department of Anaesthesia, NUH and NUS, overseeing a large growth in anaesthesia services and implementation of the residency training system. He also served as Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs and International Relations, NUS School of Medicine.

Prof Lee Tat Leang

Profile:

Prof Lee is currently working as Emeritus Consultant at the Department of Anaesthesia, National University Health System. He graduated in 1976 from the University of Singapore and obtained his Master of Medicine (Anaesthesia) and fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) in 1982 and 1984 respectively. He was awarded the Cecil Gray Prize by ANZCA in 1982. He also holds a certificate in acupuncture and moxibustion from the Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Beijing, PRC) and he is the clinical director of acupuncture service at the National University Hospital.

Prof Lee has been involved in the process of training and examination in anaesthesia in Singapore since 1985. He was head of department from 1991-2003. He chaired the Specialist Training Committee and the Residency Advisory Committee (RAC) for anaesthesia from 2000-2013 and is still a member of the RAC. He had also served in many national committees - the Chinese Proprietary Medicine Advisory Committee (Chairman), Medicinal Advisory Committee, Specialist Accreditation Board, Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners Board, Scientific Review Committee on Claims of Complementary and Alternative Medicine, and MOH Steering Committee for Joint Examinations with ABMS.

Prof Lee had served in many national and international professional organizations - Singapore Society of Anaesthesiologists (President 1992 & 1995); Asian Australasian Regional Section of the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (Chairman 1998 – 2002); Asian & Oceanic Society of Regional Anaesthesia & Pain Medicine (President 2005 – 2007); Temporary adviser to WHO (1999 – 2007); past and present member of Editorial Boards include Anesthesia and Analgesia, Pain Practice, Acta Anaesthesiologica Taiwanica, Journal of Acupuncture and Tuina Science, Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, and Open Journal of Anaesthesiology.

Prof Lee was awarded the clinician mentor award by the Ministry of Health of Singapore in 2011 for his significant contribution to the specialty, and long service awards by the Ministry of Health, National University of Singapore, and the National University Hospital.

Assoc Prof Sophia Ang Bee Leng

Profile:

Sophia Ang was a graduate of NUS medical school in 1990 and obtained her Master of Medicine Anaesthesia in 1995. She specialised in cardiac anaesthesia and completed a year of cardiac anaesthesia training in Massachusetts General Hospital in 1998 to 1999 and another year in Texas Heart Institute in 1999 to 2000.

She is accredited to do perioperative transoesophageal echocardiography by National Board of Echocardiography US in 1999 and recertified in 2014.

Sophia is interested in promoting and teaching patient safety. She is the Vice Chairman Medical Board for Patient safety and operations of the National University Hospital with interest in projects promoting patient safety such as critical laboratory test communication, reduction of failure to rescue and proper handover of care.

Sophia was awarded the Public service excellence Gold award in 2011 and was leader of the team awarded the Singapore National Medical Excellence Team award in 2012 for Communication of critical laboratory tests. She was previously a Patient safety consultant with the Ministry of Health and a representative at in the WHO High 5 Patient Safety Project in which her team in NUH was awarded best poster for implementation of correct site surgery in 2012 at WHO High 5 Project Seminar. In 2020 she received a Bronze National Day Award for Administration work in Patient Safety.

She was previously the President of Singapore Society of Anaesthesia 2006, ex anaesthesia specialty editor for the Singapore Medical Journal and is again a member of the Singapore Medical Council in 2024 after serving 2 previous terms 2021-2018.

Assoc Prof Terry Pan Ling Te

Profile:

Dr Terry Pan is a senior consultant anaesthetist and Assoc Prof with the Department of Anaesthesia, National University Health System, Singapore. He obtained his fellowship with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) in 2009 and successfully completed a year of fellowship in general paediatrics and liver transplant anaesthesia under the NUHS AMDA award at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge, UK in 2012.

Besides clinical anaesthesia, Dr Pan has keen interest in technology-enhanced learning and the role of simulation-based training in health profession education. He has conducted several workshops and successfully developed a simulation-based liver anaesthesia course (SALT) for anaesthetists and anaesthetic assistants involved in liver transplantation. He successfully completed a Masters in Health Profession Education (MHPE) in 2018. In 2020, Dr Pan was awarded the NUS Medicine Teaching Excellence Award and Educator of the Year Award for AY 2018/19. He has worked on the Next Generation Electronic Medical Record (NGEMR) project at National University Hospital and is interested in the continual education and best practices in EMR.

Asst Prof Loh May-Han obtained her MBBS and Master of Medicine in Anaesthesiology from the National University of Singapore (NUS). Under the Academic Medicine Development Award, she completed her subspecialty fellowship in Obstetric Anaesthesia at King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women, Western Australia.

She was a member of the task force comprising members of Singapore Society of Anaesthesiologists (SSA) and Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society of Singapore (OGSS) that published local guidelines for expectant mothers. She has lectured and moderated on topics related to Obstetric Anaesthesia.

Asst Prof Loh is actively involved in medical education, including curriculum development, lecturing, mentoring, and examining medical students at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine NUS. She has consistently received excellent teaching feedback from her students, and received the Dedication to Teaching Award in 2013-2014, the Undergraduate Most Effective Teacher Award in 2015-2016, and the Undergraduate Teacher of the Year Award 2014-2015, 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 from the Department of Anaesthesia, NUS. In recognition of her outstanding contributions, Asst Prof Loh was presented with the NUS Medicine Teaching Excellence Award 2018/2019, the NUS Medicine Fortitude Award 2020, the NUHS Teaching Excellence Award 2020, and the Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence in 2018/2019, 2019/2020, 2021/2022 and 2022/2023.

Serving in Medical Affairs – Medicolegal, she is a pivotal leader in managing medicolegal matters and ensuring adherence to the highest legal and ethical standards in Alexandra Hospital, a cluster member of the National University Health System.

Asst Prof Loh is an active member in Singapore’s anaesthesia community. She won the Singapore Society of Anaesthesiologists (SSA) inaugural CARES award, which was presented to the most all-rounded specialist trainee nationally, in recognition of her excellence in clinical, administrative, research and education, as well as her contributions to the anaesthesia community. She had served as Treasurer of the SSA, played a pivotal role in organising the Anaesthesia Day Public Forum, was Chairman of the Organising Committee for the regional biennial anaesthesia education event - Singapore Anaesthesia Refresher Course 2018 which incorporated the KK Hospital Obstetric Anaesthesia Symposium, and was a member in the Social Subcommittee for the 18th World Congress of Anaesthesiologists hosted in Singapore.

Adjunct Associate Professor Will Loh graduated from University College London Medical School and completed his medicine, anaesthesia, research and intensive care training in Liverpool. He is dually accredited in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia. Prof Loh is a Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, a Fellow of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine, and holds the European Diploma in Intensive Care. He is also a member of the Neuro-Intensive Care group of the European Society of Intensive Care. Before moving to National University Hospital Singapore, Prof Loh was the chair of intensive care at The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust, United Kingdom.

Prof Loh is the Associate Chairman Medical Board for Clinical Risk Management (CRM), and Director of Research at the Department of Anaesthesia at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.

His research interests are in the management of sepsis, sarcopenia and neurocognition after critical illness, traumatic brain injury and neuroanaesthesia. He is an examiner in the Masters of Medicine program for anaesthesia and Intensive care at the National University of Singapore. He has written numerous book chapters on intensive care and published over 60 papers in peer-reviewed journals.

Profile:

Dr Tay graduated from NUS School of Medicine in 1997, completed his specialist training in Anaesthesiology locally in 2006 and subspecialty training in Pain Medicine in Australia in 2008.

He has taken on various leadership roles since he joined the Department of Anaesthesia, NUH in 2004 including leading the Pain Management Unit in 2010 and being the Clinical Director in 2016 before focusing on postgraduate training and assessment.

Dr Tay has taken on various post-graduate teaching roles in the department including being Assistant Program Director for NUHS Anaesthesia Residency, and as a faculty involved in simulation training, regional anaesthesia and pain management. He is also a clinical tutor in Anaesthesia Department for undergraduate teaching.

Dr Tay has been involved in all components of the Anaesthesiology postgraduate examinations since 2014, including American Board of Medical Specialty, Singapore (ABMS-S), Master of Medicine (Anaesthesiology) and the Anaesthesiology Exit examination. In 2019, Dr Tay revised and merged all components of the Postgraduate examinations into a single 3-parts Master of Medicine Anaesthesiology examination that is coherent and consistent with the training objectives of the Singapore Anaesthesiology Residency Programme. In the process, Dr Tay changed the examination completely by rewriting the examination syllabus, rationalized the assessment tools to complement progressive competency, introduced objective structured clinical examination, criterion-based standard setting and post-examination psychometric analysis.

Dr Tay is currently the Chair of the MMed (Anaesthesiology) Committee, Chief Examiner for all the components of MMed (Anaesthesiology) examination and Member of the Residency Advisory Committee and is continuing his work in revising the postgraduate assessment to match teaching and training objectives that is consistent with the evolving clinical practice and local population needs.
