MFSD7c functions as a transporter of choline at the blood–brain barrier

Led by Assoc Prof Nguyen Nam Long, researchers from the NUSMED Immunology TRP at NUSMedicine unexpectedly discovered that an orphan transporter called protein Mfsd7c transports excessive choline out of the blood-brain barrier, instead of ingesting choline like other organs do.

Choline is a micro-nutrient especially needed by the brain and nervous system to regulate memory, moods and muscle control. This finding opens new avenues for understanding neurological diseases and improving related therapeutics.
