Master of Science in Biomedical Informatics

The Master of Science in Biomedical Informatics (MSc in BMI) is offered by the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine (NUSMed) as a full time (1 year) or part-time (2 years) postgraduate degree programme by Coursework with specialisation in Analytics or Hospital Management.

The programme aims to impart to students a suite of core skills including evidence-based clinical decision making, machine learning, data visualisation, effective communication, strategic leadership, and entrepreneurship. Students would be trained to reason, critically analyse, and subsequently evaluate the effectiveness of clinical decision support systems, lead and implement production and strategic clinical innovations or projects.

ENDEAVOUR.AI is a platform which integrates live data from the next generation electronic medical patient records system (NGEMR) to compute multiple AI insights. By reading both the history of a patient and the doctors’ notes in real time, ENDEAVOUR.AI can generate accurate predictions of the patient’s length of hospital stay. The system automatically alerts clinicians and administrators of increasing wait times in emergency departments, enabling early activation of manpower resources. Combined with ED attendance prediction tools, waiting times can be shortened especially during peak hours at 8am and 6pm with its predictive functions. The actual reduction can range from 30mins to hours depending on how manpower resources can be deployed.

Technological advances and innovations in machine learning and data analytics promise to revolutionise healthcare. While some technologies have been adopted in certain areas of the healthcare system, their potential is far from maximised. Leaders in healthcare technology need to be prepared to spearhead the continued development and application of new technologies to address changing needs, increase efficiency and improve the quality of personalised care. This programme will introduce you to the evolving landscape of medical technologies like Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and equip you to harness and implement these technologies in your work.
