Commercialisation Activities

Through our NIC members, we collaborate with the local and international industry, government agencies, regulatory bodies, venture capitalists and investors on the commercialisation journey. Our goal is to strengthen the value proposition of the commercialisation technology and we achieve this by supporting licensing and IP, creating new companies (start-ups), and enabling partnerships and collaborations.

Some of the ongoing commercialisation activities under the Kickstart Initiative include:

Formation of company GenY Biologics for Dengue diagnosis and treatment
Through Kickstart, we have facilitated the process to create a new NUS spinoff company from NUS Medicine faculty member Professor Paul MacAry’s research. The company’s primary asset is Dengue treatment. Two of our NIC members have expressed interest and are committed to taking it to incorporation.

Medical device solutions for Cardiovascular disease
Professor Theodoros Kofidis, a heart surgeon and entrepreneur, will be appointed as the Chief Scientific Advisor for a new company in the cardiovascular disease space. This new company will be incorporated in Singapore and supported by Temasek. Leveraging two separate NIC-supported collaborations from US-based start-ups, the new company will provide a new medical device for heart failure patients, addressing several unmet clinical needs.

Partnership and collaboration with US-based company Nanotics for Nanomedicine solutions
Nanotics was co-founded by an NIC member and through Kickstart, we will be supporting a partnership between NUS and the US-based company:

  • Nanotics and Prof Swaine Chen’s lab are collaborating on a research programme to create a new type of antibody through a bacterial nanobody platform technology. Nanotics will fund this work while the antibody assets targeting disease molecular targets will be licensed back to Nanotics.
  • In partnership with NUS Industry Liaison Office, Nanotics will develop technologies in Nanomedicine.

Partnership between NUS Medicine and Petitia to incorporate a company/institute to provide CET courses

Partnership with University of Cambridge
Through Kickstart, we are exploring commercialisation opportunities arising from a new partnership between NUS Singapore and University of Cambridge. The goal is to leverage the new biotech ecosystems around the world.
