NUS-Overseas Postdoctoral Fellowship and START Award 2017

Congratulations to Dr Peh Hong Yong on receiving the prestigious NUS-Overseas Postdoctoral Fellowship (NUS-OPF), where he will begin his postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He was also presented the “Singapore Teaching and Academic Research Talent Scheme” award by Singapore Minister of Education (Higher Education and Skills) Mr Ong Ye Kung. The NUS-OPF provides opportunity to selected outstanding individuals for international postdoctoral training at top universities. The NUS-OPF scheme is part of NUS’ continuing efforts to develop its best talents for a career in academia through exposure to international postdoctoral training.

Hong Yong is now appointed a Senior Tutor in the department of pharmacology, and concurrently a postdoctoral research fellow at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He had recently completed his PhD under supervisor A/P Wai-Shiu Fred Wong. During his PhD candidature, Hong Yong was awarded the President Graduate Fellowship and NUS-Industry Relevant Program Scholarship, where he published 17 peer-reviewed articles and won numerous awards including the Pharmacia Medal and Prize in Pharmacology (1st place), Society for Redox Biology & Medicine Travel Award, HOPE Meeting with Nobel Laureates Travel Fellowship, Global Young Scientist Summit Travel Fellowship, Lee Foundation International Conference Travel Award and YLL-SoM AGSC Best Oral Presenter Award (1st place) twice in 2014 and 2016.

NUS Medicine Awards Ceremony 2017

Congratulations to Dr Alan Prem Kumar and Associate Professor Wai Shiu Fred, Wong (left to right) for being awarded the Graduate Mentor of the Year Award 2017. The award is to recognise excellence in mentorship and the professional development of graduate students at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine in Acedemic Year 2016/2017.

Congratulation to Associate Professor Bian Jinsong for being awarded the Research Excellence Award. The award is to recognise staff members for their continued excellence and leadership in research in the Academic Year 2015/2016.

Singapore Neuroscience Association and Pharmacological Society (Singapore) Award Winners

Congratulations to Professor Peter Wong and Associate Professor Gavin Dawe for winning Singapore Neuroscience Association (SNA) Awards and Associate Professor Gautam Sethi for winning the Pharmacological Society of Singapore (PSS) Award.

Prof Wong was awarded the SNA Lifetime Achievement Award. A/Prof Gavin S. Dawe won the SNA Distinguished Neuroscientist Award. The awards were presented on 5th July 2017 at the SNA Symposium 2017 by the Guest of Honour, Professor Lawrence Ho Khek-Yu, Vice Dean (Research), Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore. The SNA Lifetime Achievement Award recognises Prof Peter Wong’s exceptional and sustained record of significant contributions to neuroscience. The SNA Distinguished Neuroscientist Award recognises A/Prof Dawe’s outstanding contribution to neuroscience research.

A/Prof Gautam Sethi won the inaugural PSS Award. The award was presented during the closing ceremony of the International Conference on Scientific Frontiers in Natural Product Based Drugs 2017 (SFNPBD 2017) on 7 July 2017. The award was presented by Professor Michael Spedding, Secretary General of the International Union of Basic and Clincial Pharmacology (IUPHAR). A/Prof Sethi was honoured with the inaugural PSS Award for excellence in pharmacology research for his prolific and outstanding contributions to the field of cancer pharmacology.
