Breast cancer is the most common cancer amongst women in Singapore and is also the top killer. Out of over 3,000 breast cancer cases a year, 750 women die from it. These are our mothers, grandmothers, aunts, cousins, sisters, nieces, and daughters.Breast cancer research has advanced considerably in recent years, but significant unmet needs remain. We need to identify which patients are at risk for developing resistance to common breast cancer therapies; to develop targeted drugs for patients with certain markers; and understand the biology of triple-negative breast cancer, an aggressive form of breast cancer with a poor prognosis.

At NUS Medicine, our researchers are working to answer some of these pressing needs, especially as they relate to Asian patients. By studying the genes and other factors that influence survival for different types of breast cancer, they are paving the way towards more optimised treatment strategies and new drugs for this common cancer.
