Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology celebrates 100th anniversary this year, from its beginnings in 1922 as the Department of Midwifery and Diseases at the King Edward VII College of Medicine, under the headship of Dr A L Hoops (1922-1923), to its present-day status as proud member of the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at NUS with Associate Professor Mahesh Choolani at the helm. The Department has had many illustrious Heads, the third of whom was Professor Benjamin Henry Sheares (1941-1958), and continues to pursue excellence in teaching, clinical service and research.

Sabaratnam Arulkumaran Scholarship

In honour of Professor Sir Arulkumaran’s academic legacy at the NUS Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, we have initiated the Sabaratnam Arulkumaran Scholarship to support promising clinician researchers and translational scientists to pursue research in Global Women’s Health, with the mission of building up research talent and capacity, elevating academic research in NUS and partner institutions, and expanding our global academic network. We envision an academic scholarship that will promote the development of early- to mid-career academic scholars committed to developing research capacity at NUS.
