FIRST-CLASS HEALTH SERVICE – PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE

Initiated in 2004 by medical students from NUS Medicine, the more-than-a-decade old Public Health Service (PHS) aims to be a first-class student-led health service in Singapore. Its motto is “Promoting Health, Spreading Awareness”.

This in essence summarises what PHS does as a health service – firstly, promoting positive health behaviour through a population-based approach using primary and secondary prevention strategies; and secondly, spreading awareness of the need and the means to look after one’s own health through its health education programmes.

Its efforts target health education, health screening and follow-up.

The PHS free annual flagship health screening event includes screening and education for common chronic diseases and cancers, geriatrics screening, oral health screening, doctor consultations. Participants are linked up with local health and social support systems, after which their progress is checked via its Telehealth Initiative. These are made possible by students from NUS and NTU healthcare-related faculties (Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Social Work), as well as health professionals and volunteers from partnering organisations.

The PHS Young Health Ambassadors Programme (YHAP) aims to empower youth with relevant health knowledge and social interaction skills, so that they can become health ambassadors who advocate healthy living in their families and communities.
