Dr Michelle TAN
Dr Michelle Tan is a researcher (PhD Student) at the Centre for Sustainable Medicine and a practising clinician at Changi General Hospital. Awarded the NMRC Research Training Fellowship, her doctoral research focuses on evaluating the carbon footprint of five acute care pathways in a Singapore hospital and modelling mitigation strategies to inform more sustainable models of care.
As a doctor and parent, Dr Tan is passionate about advancing sustainability in healthcare and fostering a data-driven culture within her hospital, where she also serves on the hospital’s Steering Committee on Environmental Sustainability. She completed her medical studies at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, and trained in Anaesthesiology under the SingHealth Residency Programme. She holds a Modular Masters certificate in Data Science (Healthcare) from the Singapore University of Technology and Design, and a certification in Carbon Footprinting through Life Cycle Analysis from A*STAR SIMTech.
She has spearheaded several sustainability initiatives, most notably leading the successful decommissioning of her hospital’s nitrous oxide manifold and transition to portable cylinders in operating theatres, with a leak monitoring system. She aims to contribute research that drives environmentally sustainable practices, ensuring that healthcare serves both patients and the planet.
