Dr Haitong Zhe SUN
Dr Haitong Zhe Sun is the Senior Planetary Science Lead at the Centre for Sustainable Medicine and Principal Investigator of the HAITONG Lab (Health Associated Integrated Traverse of Nature and Geoscience). Trained as both an Earth and Planetary scientist and an Environmental Epidemiologist, Dr Sun’s research sits at the intersection of climate, air pollution, and public health. A Fulbright Scholar since 2016, he uses high-resolution environmental data and numerical earth system models to examine how planetary changes affect human wellbeing—particularly among vulnerable populations such as pregnant women and elderly affected by non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including chronic respiratory and cardiovascular conditions. He currently leads the Chinese “ZEBRA” multi-province maternity cohort, a study of over 200,000 expectant mothers that enables large-scale, in-depth research on maternal and child health.
Dr Sun holds joint appointments at the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, the University of Cambridge (National Centre for Atmospheric Science, UK), and the School of Medicine at Zhejiang University (Hangzhou, China). He serves as a Research Collaborator to the World Health Organization, advising on Air Pollution and Population Health, and as a Senior Collaborative Scientist for the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) studies. He holds dual PhDs in Chemistry & Earth Science and Public Health from the University of Cambridge, with earlier training at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (Baltimore, USA), and double bachelor’s degrees in Environmental Science and Mathematics from Peking University (Beijing, China).
