Prof Fisher is an Australian infectious diseases physician who first moved to the National University Hospital, Singapore in March 2003 during the SARS outbreak. He has had many leadership roles in international outbreak missions in Africa and Asia and outbreak response trainings globally. He was chair of the steering committee of WHO’s Global Outbreak Alert & Response Network (2018-2022) and was one of 12 international technical experts on the WHO mission to China in February 2020 to investigate the COVID-19 outbreak. In 2022, he was given a certificate for outstanding leadership by the Director General of WHO. During the pandemic he engaged the media on over 750 occasions.

He is chief editor of a 40-chapter textbook on pandemic preparedness and response. Past awards include from the courage foundation (2003, 2015), National Clinical Excellence Awards (2013, 2021). In 2018 he received the Minister for Health Award and most recently in 2023 he earned a Commendation Medal for COVID-19, from the Prime Minister’s Office, Singapore, a Public Administration Medal (Bronze) in Singapore’s National Day Awards and the EK Yeo oration gold medal, from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
