David was raised in West Texas and attended Rice University in Houston, Texas, USA before receiving his M.D. from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas, USA. He completed Internal Medicine residency and Infectious Diseases specialty training in New York Hospital and Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre as part of Cornell University Medical Centre (CUMC) in New York City.

David was Visiting Investigator (Virology) at Rockefeller University and an Assistant Professor in the CUMC Division of Infectious Diseases when he was recruited to Singapore to introduce and establish Infectious Diseases as a specialty. He developed the Infectious Diseases clinical service and clinical training program and became the first Infectious Diseases Head of Department in Singapore. From 1994 to 2020, he returned to the US and was CEO of a specialty practice providing quaternary Infectious Diseases care in Dallas, Texas while serving as Courage Fund Professor in Singapore from 2011 until 2020.

In early 2020, David again moved full-time to Singapore. In addition to administrative duties including as Deputy Executive Director, Health District @ Queenstown, he actively practices as an Infectious Diseases clinician, teacher, and mentor.
