WHO Disease Outbreak News: Ebola disease caused by Bundibugyo virus, Democratic Republic of the Congo & Uganda

On May 16, 2026, the World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) due to a new outbreak of Ebola disease caused by the Bundibugyo virus.

Key Facts:

  • The outbreak is currently affecting the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and has crossed the border into Uganda.

  • As of mid-May 2026, the DRC has reported 246 suspected cases and 80 deaths.

  • Unlike other strains of Ebola, there are currently no approved vaccines or specific treatments for the Bundibugyo virus, making early supportive medical care critical for survival.
